b18a1 integ with mpra aka automatic transmission

i have a b18a1 with an mpra automatic tranny. rumor has it that automatics can be faster than sticks. is this true? i plan to rebuild the drop the motor in a crx and call it a day. is the tranny trash? or could it beat a b series stick?
