My car is doing the same thing. This might sound farfetched, but I think that it's because our cars are running WAY too rich. When the fuel pump primes and the car starts, I believe that the fuel pressure or the fact that the spark plugs are covered in fuel makes the car not want to start again until the pressure dies down/fuel dries (hence the reason why it takes a bit for the car to start up again). Pull the spark plugs and check the tips. I just did this and saw fuel on all of them
.
I'm going to lean out the car tomorrow using an SAFC(without a wideband
) and will report back to let you know how it went.

Idle surging could be a tight throttle cable. Does the non-starting problem happen more frequently when it's hot outside? If so, I can almost guarantee it's your main relay, it's a pretty common problem on these cars. Search other threads to see how to check it, I can't really explain how to get at it.
It usally just happends once a day, its happends at any temp and the car is usally at operating temp it will happend in the morning when i try to start it up for the second time in a day and it just takes a couple of min of cranking
If it was the main relay, the problem would be consistant. Since your car initially starts fine, I don't see how a relay (that is always used when starting the car) could cause the car to not start on the second or third attempt.

its probably your main relay. it wont happen all the time, but frequently depending on how gone it is. when u turn ur key two positions, and all the lights in thecluster come on, you should hear the fuel pump prime. if u hear it and your car doesnt start, its not ur main relay, if you dont it is. next time ur car doesnt start, u should check SPARK, FUEL, and TIMING. it will always be one of those three things.
