really scared look and see if you can help please
hey everyone I have an H22a hatch(so i figured this would be the best place for an engine question) and when i pulled the oil pan I found somthing a little weird. First i want to say that I've heard no noises, and before i started working on it it ran flawlessly. my brother just rebuilt the motor less than a year ago aswell...anyway, anyone know what this is? any chance it just get nocked in the pan when we were putting it back together??
heres the pic
please help if possible, this was my last step in the turbo kit install and I was hoping to be driving it tomorrow!
not tearing the head apart
but let me know and thank you in advance!!!

I'd say that it looks like a piston wrist pin circlip. BTW that is BAD to have in the oil pan. If it works now then I would pull the head and pistons and fix it ASAP before it messes up the cylinder walls.

1997 + h22's have floating pins. If it is really thin then maybe it is not from the piston. what's the outside diameter? if it is a little larger than .866" then ya, I bet it's a piston pin circlip.

less. I measured it real quick with a tape measurer(i know not to accurate) but it was a little more than 1/16 less than 3/4 inch... i wonder what it could be...valvetrain retainer of some sort?? thanks again for the input

if it did not come from the piston pin then I would check your LMAs. There is a small thin circlip that holds the plunger in the LMA base. That is not as critical but still not good.
Hope you figure it out.

i looked at some pics of lmas and that circlip looks alot like it but it almost looks thicker than what i have...any other idea before i pull the cams and suck thurdsay prolly?
possibly the axle clip??? could have fallen into the pan when it was being put back on before and no one noticed it and its been sitting at the bottom of the pan since then...??? if pistons are 1995/pressed and the rest of the internals/head look like everything is where its supposed to be, id guess it fell into the pan before reassembly, or even though the oil fill on the valve cover if its small enough...
I was going to say it looks like an axle clip, but how the hell you get that in an oil pan is beyond me. did you have the oil pan out while working with some axles near it?

How big is it exactly? The wrist pin clips are bigger than the LMA clips. If the engine is running fine and there is no sign of dammage, then I wouldn't worry about it. If it were from an installed piston you would have a lot of other metal bits in the pan and in the screen on the oil pickup. If it's from the LMA, the plunger is still captured under the rocker so no huge problem there either.
My guess is that it's some random piece that fell into the pan when the engine was being assembled.

if you are really really curious (most of us are anyways) as to what it actually is, take it to your local parts department and compare it with the different types of clips in the engine/tranny to see what it matches up to, just hope that the dealership has most of the different types of clips in stock
i thought it would be the piston wrist pin circlip but it seems to me that the opening of the circlip is wider than normal[im holding mine up..from an h22a]..it might possibly be the axle clip..im not sure tho

If it was running fine may I ask why you pulled the oil pan in the first place? I have never pulled an oil pan unless I had to for some reason!!!!!

hey,
i would probably try to take it into a honda dealer and see what the techs there think? they would actually be able to see it in person.

I also want to say wrist pin clip.
I would pull the plugs and see if you could get access to a tool that will allow you to look at your cylinder walls. You could have Honda or a shop at least do that for you since the tool is around $400+

They call it an endoscope
