My tranny used to work
I let my friend take my 95 GSR up the street after just getting it back on the road. A long time in coming. The clutch and tranny had always worked fine. Some kind of serious clutch I did not install, that has lost some of its bite, but still bucks the car and chirps the tires. I drove it a day later and it didnt feel right but wasnt sure. It seemed to be making a "clunking noise", just one clunk, when shifting into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd with any decent rpm. On the highway I downshifted into third to hear the vtec, 60000rpm. Immediately, I get this wirring, buzzing sound that has not gone away. It felt like it was slipping, but Ive had worn clutches and it wasnt the same. It doesnt feel like its slipping going up steep hills in 2nd. It came on suddenly and hasnt gone away. I thinks its always there but you can only really hear it good at 50mph or above, 3rd 4th 5th. The noise goes away when the clutch is out. I got it home and parked it.
My friend hammered on my cold car. My major concern [B] besides a diagnosis is how long can I keep driving it?
Cant afford a clutch right now and sure as hell cant afford a tranny. And how do I prove he did it? Thanks

Probably your clutch...replacing a clutch can be easy with the right resources. This might help if you plan on doing it yourself http://www.c-speedracing.com/h...h.php
Thanks for the link. The wirring mechanical buzzing sounds like gears. I want to believe its the clutch. I must emphasize it happened instantaneously. There was no problem
with the car before I let someone drive it. The clunking when shifting and then boom loud constant noise which is maybe too gentle to be called grinding.
If you break it you bought it and I know I didnt miss a shift or do anything abusive to it. Was this going to happen anyway ? How easy is it to wreck a clutch/tranny on a mostly stock car that had no evident problems?

Just drove it again. The clunk is more like a plainly audible bang. Just one as power is applied. Does the drive shaft have a u-joint? Could it be the drive shaft? Reminds me of a u-joint I lost in a Dodge van. A smack when accelerating. The sounds it was making besides the wirring were like a halloween soundtrack. Weird creeks and groans. The clunk to my uneducated ear could could be a broken mount or linkage. Heres the weird thing. It might even be shifting easier?
Ya, I checked the archives and theres was 15 different diagnosis for the same stuff, and few followed up on what the prob was. Most of the loud wirring sounds involved difficult shifting and thats not the case right now. Just to be clear there are no probs with clutch out/nuetral. I will follow up when I can get it fixed.

Thanks. Actually it does. Drove it again and I got this squeak in the clutch every time I push it. This is brand new and comes with alot of other wierd sounds. Kind of sucks because it was good otherwise . I bought the car used, history unknown. Some kind of Hi-Po clutch on the cheap end judging by some of the other parts. I dont race at all, I just like having a nice machine. Can I just get another spring or put it back on? Whats a good replacement, one that would last till it didnt grab anymore? Should I go stock? I see there over $200. Dont want another cheap Hi-Po.
I cant see doing it in the driveway unless jackstands would raise it enough. Its low as hell with Omni's. I once paid $600 for a clutch job on my 1978 Civic Wagon Deluxe. Is that a realistic price including parts?

It's definitely a bad spring then. You can do it in your driveway. Get a friend to help you with the tranny though. You can't just replace the spring, get an entire clutch kit w/ pressure plate, disk, throwout bearing. My recommendation would be a ~250 Exedy Stage one kit, off ebay or in the classifieds here on h-t. And get the flywheel resurfaced by a machine shop for $30 so it will grab nicely.
