I don't want my car stolen! Suggestions please...
Please don't flame for the n00b question, I know pretty much nothing about car security.
While I'm at college this fall, my car will be parked in a student lot without me driving it for 3 or 4 days at a time. I see so many "help EBP EM1 stolen in xxx location, etc" threads, that I'm getting worried.
I know there are a lot of ways to protect a car, I just don't know which alarm/kill switch/whatever is the best bet. All I want is to prevent the car from being taken away. I don't keep anything of value inside it and the interior/audio is stock.
cliffs: what anti-theft system to get?

Start with an alarm, does not have to be anything fancy, any basic brand name alarm will do, do a basic install and add starter cut, hood and trunk/hatch triggers.
Then add a "kill switch" or two, independent of the alarm and each other, if you install a "kill switch" on the fuel pump relays control line from ECU/ECM and one on the injector relays coil ground, you can use small .5A switches, [SPST on/off switch] they will shut down the fuel pump and injectors.
Feel free to IM me if you have more questions.

Any alarm with a good sensor and starter kill should do the trick most of the time. But if you're really worried a backup battery or hood lock because no matter how good of a alarm you have w/o power it's useless.
Basic alarm & add a couple sirens to it. Keeps them out of your car (cuz it hurts) and gets attention cuz its obnoxious. Backup battery is not a bad idea either, only takes a couple seconds to pop a hood & clip a batt cable.

ditto that.

GET AN ALPHA LOCK FOR THE RIM.I LOVE MY TWO WHEEL BOOTS TO DEATH.AND LIKE EVERYONE SAID ,A GOOD ALARM AND SOME KILL SWITCHES.
I'd add the lo-jack early warning system to that list. Not sure how much money you want/have to spend but at least this should tell you that your car's been stolen/towed within 30 minutes instead of coming back after class and find out, it's totally gone.
There are many layers you can add. Just find out what you want to spend/ or can afford, and go with that. You'll see a lot of threads regarding layers that you should add.

Thanks for all the replies. I plan on following through on some of them. But I really wouldn't feel comfortable installing the stuff on my own. Will audio/security shops install kill switches and the like?
I'm willing to spend up to $500. I'll probably get a decent alarm like Viper and I'd like to do kill switches but I don't know where to get them done.
What do you guys think about this: http://www.ajprindle.com/index...=jump
Just as an extra hurdle to overcome?
And I dunno about the alpha lock. It looks like someone could just remove the wheel and put on the spare.

Do all the above plus get a tirelock(you can get one on ebay) and a clutch lock layer your security and dont forget to set at least the strongest 2 at all times and you will see your car in the morning!!!!

Yeah I plan on doing either a clutch or brake lock. Do you really think the tirelock works though? From what I can see, you can just remove the wheel, replace with spare, and you're set to go.

Not that easy I personally own one and what I did is just put wheel locks on all my wheels plus the 1 Tirelock . If you have tuner lugs those dont qualify as locks because a thief would just match your lock pattern then off you go mcgard.com has the best locks it might not match or you might have to paint it but it works.
And the phrase "Dude wheres your car?" wont be asked.
I got it on ebay and there are a few on now they don't last long
done right everything works!

Bottom line is to make the thief say forget it you car its to much trouble to walk up and get. Dont get caught with your pants down and you wont get Phuked,OWNED,Carnaped, snatched or stolen also if you get some more funds and you cant decide what to buy save it and go look at active GPS not passive and dont advertise!!
Then you will feel totally comfortable in saying" If they get it they can have it."
Security is always the best part of the car!

Yes those lock are good but the alpha lock is flimzy I would go with the tirelock [IMG]cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=130032731088&ih =003&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT[IMG]
Well I bought the tire lock, locking nuts, and this steering wheel lock. That should be good until I get an alarm and kill switch installed. I'm living in DC this summer, the US capital of car theft, so that's why I'm kind of going overboard with the security.
So...when I do find a reputable car audio shop that installs alarms, what specific things should I ask them to install?

I wouldn't recommend the steering wheel quick release. It doesn't do much as far as security is concerned and is just a waste of money if you plan on doing it for that cause. Get a good alarm, preferably with 2 way paging and a good wheel boot. That should be okay to start with. I've been recommended wheel boots from Mitico http://www.mitico.com/index_rhino.htm. I plan on buying mine from there once I have the money for it. I think lojack would also be a good investment.
