Default Short shift, what ia actually shorter?

I bought a short shift recently. It seems to be adjustable. The ball has screws on it side and it can move up and down the shaft. If I want to have a nice short throw the shift linkage under the shifter hits my exaust pipe.

What is shorter or different on a short shift compared to a stock shifter?

Thanks,
Charles

A short shifter actually has a longer bottom end starting at the ball. It reduces the distance you move shift ****.

I had to have my whole exhaust lowered when I put in my short shifter.

Iput in an APC short shifter, and other than it kind of being a pain to put in I haven't had any problems with it at all. I actually like it alot, and I really don't get too much heat transfer from the tranny or the exauhst.

OldSchoolHatch: How did you lower your exhaust? Did you just bend the hangers that are welded to it? My shifter tends to rattle a bit on my exhaust in 5th gear and reverse so I am very curious?.. did you change out the rubber that the exhaust hangs on or what?? Thank you!

Hey, I wish I could help you more but I didn't do it myself. I had my mechanic do it for me because he did it cheap. All he said was that it was scraping the exhaust so he had to lower it. He put in the short shifter and lowered the exhaust in a little over an hour and all the bolts were rusted over, so it probably wasn't really involved...

i just instaled my short shifter with ES shifter bushings and i love it. To solve the rattling problem, i just took a hacksaw to the extra piece to metal that hangs off the rod that connects to the actual shifter. There's an extra 2 inches that can be cut off down there. Do it and you wont hear a peep from it.
