man I tried taking out my rear main seal last time I changed my clutch, and I couldn't get to budge very easily. I was afraid of scratching the bore, so I just left it in there.
Now on my brother's del Sol when we did the clutch, he needed a new oil pan gasket and rear main, so I just took the whole plate out while the oil pan was off, and it made the job a ton easier.

Part # 91214-PH1-004
You can use a flat-head to pry it out, though if you already have the tranny off, you might as well put the extra 5 minutes into it and take the plate off so you dont scratch of the crankshaft or anything.

probably best to go ahead and change the oil pan gasket while you're at it, and make sure you don't overtighten the oil pan gasket bolts when you put it back on. They take 9 lb-ft.

hey bud i could really use a reply on this one. my real main oil seal has been leaking for about 11 months, i was really waiting to purchase everything at once,"clutch, flywhell, alxes, etc. but.... if there is a way to yank it out and replace without having to go through all that it would be da s*#t. Was there a specific reason why your seal wouldnt come out easier. i already have the seal. Plz let me now im paying more for oil than gas.
The rear main seal has a really stiff outer shell. I had to set it up on a pair of 2'x4's and knock it out with a pin punch and hammer by going around the edge and breaking it loose as I went.
To install the new seal, I flipped the cover over on the 2'x4's and used another 2'x4' to knock it in flush with the face of the cover. It was a pretty easy 10 minute job.

you must make absolutely sure NOT to nick the bore at all. Never use a flat head screwdriver or even a pin pick.
Take the plate out, just do it and remove it by hand, its hard but it will come.

Yep I agree here. Just go ahead and pull the oil pan off to remove that plate. Also replace the oil pan gasket while it's off.
You'll have to support the engine with a jackstand on the very rear pass. side corner of the block, since you're pulling the oil pan off and there will be no tranny on the engine to support the pass. side.
