Default Signs of a failing distributor

Is there any signs that could tell you that your distributor is dying? Does it make a smell or anything?

I had a a problem where I would take a left turn at an intersection and my car would shut off. It happened once and it started back up right away, but on the second time the car died and would not start until the 4th different cranking attempt. When it finally turned on, the D4 (drive 4) light was blinking and my car was not going over 15 mph. There was no mil light on. But I checked and got codes 1 (heated o2 sensor) and code 8 (tdc sensor).

Try clearing the codes and see if the TDC sensor code comes back
