I recently purchased a used z6 tranny to replace by y8 one. I've only done the removal/install once, with the help of a friend who had done it before. This time, i attempted it myself but i ran into some trouble. Removal was very simple and straight foward,within a couple of hours i successfully removed the tranny. But when i went to install the z6, it didn't want to move and clamp on to the motor. The motor is aligned with the tranny, but just wont move towards it. Im pretty sure that the shaft is going into the motor but its just giving me a headache. I've been aligning and re-aligning for 8 hours straight. I've even tried forcing it in with the bolts. but that didn't work either. Input needed asap.

 

Do you have the motor jacked up under the oil pan?

I couldn't get the thing aligned, even with another person helping me without having the engine jacked up.

jack the motor a little above horizontal and try again.

 

yea..i have the motor jacked up from the oil pan so it isn't slanted. I also have the tranny jacked up with the help of three people. I guess the splines aren't lining up. But i wonder if any one has any tips, thanks. Im taking a break after 8-9 hours.

 

you sure your clutch didnt move out of alignement??dude if the clutch is moved some you wont be able to get it in. you can stare at it with a good light and probably tell but you could run to autozone and buy a clutch alignment tool for like 3dollars...just a thought...also try maybe putting the tranny in neutral it might help

 

the hardest part is getting the input shaft aligned with the pilot bearing, it is a pain in the ***, keep trying

 

yea...i'll keep trying. As for the clutch, i'll check that also. Is it possible for the clutch to slide out of place even though i haven't changed it??? thanks for all the input

 

also how do i check if the tranny is in neutral? Should the shift linkage be pulled out or not?

 

just stick a shift linkage on there with a screw driver temporarily through the bitch pin hole... expletive it hehe

 

welps after countless hours of trying and three different trannies, we were able to figure out the problem. Somewhere during the many trials of pushing the tranny in, we slammed in most of the clutch teeth. This didn't allow the shaft to properly line up and most imortantly it didn't allow the shaft to slide in. After re-adjusting the clutch teeth by taking it out and forcing it backwards into teh shaft of the tranny(in effect aligning/shaping the teeth) , we were able to bolt the tranny and motor together!

 

try filing the splines next time instead of forcing the disk on the shaft to correct them. im sure it wasn't too healthy for the input shaft on the trans. should have thought of that after the outcome of trying to jam the tranny in. but good to hear u got it done.
