Default VTEC not engaging?

I've noticed that VTEC sometimes doesn't engage if I have only started the car 5 mins beforehand. Is this normal? Does the solenoid have to warm up or something? Is this a dumbass n00b question?

The solenoid doesn't have to warm up but the engine coolant temp does. The ECU will not let VTEC engage unless the temp above 150 deg (I think). You really shouldn't be going full throttle or high rpm on the engine untill it is at operating temp anyway.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't a smart thing to do once I did it.
