Default Real Noob question about sub install

Right off the bat I apoligize for being so ignorant. I just got a 12" JL audio sub. I know absolutly nothing about car audio systems. I can't hook the sub right up to the RCA ouputs on the headunit can I? If not I will need an amp. Here is where I have no clue as too what I am looking for. I don't know what brand or size amp I need and I have no idea what features I need. I am sure once I get everything I will be able to install myself, I just need some help on what I need. Thanks guys, and again, sorry for my extreme lack of knowledge in this area.

No, it can't be hooked to the RCAs, yes, you will need an amp.

What is the model of the JL sub? 94

a JL 250/1 should be plenty to power that sub....as for connections...you will need a set of RCA's to go from the amp to the HU. Then run ur speaker, power, ground and remote wires as necessary. That should work for ya

All of the wiring instructions should come with the amp, right? Do I have to run the speaker wires to the amp? I thought I just ran them off the headunit. All I want to run off of the amp is the sub.

You run (speaker) wire from amp to sub, which has nothing to do with normal car speakers, if that's what you wanted to know.

yes all wiring instructions come with the amp....like Odessa said, you run the speaker wire from the amp to the sub. You have to run the RCA cables to the output wires on the back of the headunit.

And then all I need to run is power and ground?

power, ground and remote wire. The remote wire runs from the amp to the headunit. Usually its a blue wire on the back of the headunit. This allows the amp to turn on and off with the headunit. Im running 3 12w3's in my truck

Thanks for all the help guys, this seems pretty straight forward. All I need now is an amp, so if anyone has one that will work for my application, let me know.

One more quick question, Do I run the power and ground straight to the battery, or do I ground it somewhere in the trunk?

The 12W0-8 is a 125W "RMS", [continuous power handling], you will need an amp that makes 1x125W RMS into 8 ohms or 1x250W RMS into 4 ohms.

The JL Audio 250/1 makes 250W RMS into 1.5 -4 ohms @ 11V-14.5V, it is a regulated "output" however if connected to 8 ohms it will make 125W and as CRX_Phanton1 suggests it would make a perfect amp for that sub.

Ground the amp, with as short a ground lead as you can use, to the floor pan of the car, seat and seat belt bolts work very well, also I should mention the JL Audio amps are less the 2.5" high and will fit under the pass seat on most, [if not all] Honda/Acuras, this will keep the power lead as short as possible as well as the RCA cable, and you have 4 seat bolts to choose from to ground the amp. 94

I was planning on mounting the amp to the sub box. Is that a good idea?

you might check here http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...yID=1

You also might post a price range so people can give you some options.

Haha. Have fun trying to find an amp for less than 100 bones unless it's used.

I wouldn't mount the amp on the box if I were you. The box is a pretty bad place to be for an amp. Mount it under a seat or something.

you might look here http://cgi.ebay.com/Autotek-Me...wItem

you might stretch your budget a little a get one of these http://www.zedaudio.com/store.html

You wont find a better amp for the price.

Both amps were designed by the same person.
