Default quick knock sensor question, yea did some searching

so i did a crapload of searching and extensive reading, but most of thos KS threads end up kinda dead.

did H23 swap. reinstalled dizzy from old motor, only a month old. just put it on, bolted it, and went. my understanding is that the dizzy rotor only fits onto the block on way, so timing cant really be off?

anyway, if timing IS in fact off, can that cause CEL 23? it only comes on after driving for a while, fully warmed up. DEFINITE loss in power while in gimp mode. i dont wanna shell out $130 for a new sensor. so im hoping its either timing or a bad wire, which ill check tomorrow.

also, only gas i use is 93 (next lowest is 89, no 91 here), and my car is burning through it like crazy.

the knock sensor CEL only comes up when the sensor detects knock or if it is broken. The reason you feel a power loss is because the ecu has retarded the timing to lower the cylinder pressure to prevent the engine from detonating.

i read on here quite a few times that CEL 23 only comes up when KS is bad or a wire is bad

in my mind it'd be throwing the code because its detecting knock. but, after the hour of searching i did on here, so many more posts said "CEL 23 does NOT mean knock, it means bad sensor". doesnt make sense to me, thats why im asking.

well... if you have knock... then maybe the light would go on... and well... if it was detecting knock when.. there isn't...

wouldn't that mean the sensor is bad?

your right, it doest always mean that it is detecting knock.

the code 23 cel will come up if:
there is a discrepancy in the signal coming from the knock sensor to the ecu
the sensor is broken
it detects knock

the point of the knock sensor code isnt to tell you the sensor is broken. Its there as a safeguard to if and when the motor does knock, the ecu will retard the timing to lower the cylinder pressure and egt.

i've said that atleast 3 times in the past couple days

Im in the same boat u are. 9 times our of 10, its a bad sensor or wire. Honestly,I would search around here, and see if anyone has a knock sensor they know that works and buy it from them. And if thats not the case, then try the wire. If that doesnt work, then maybe your KS is detecting something and is for once actually working. The knock sensor on hondas is a piece of **** IMO

you dont hear about it doing its job because motors are not supposed to detonate.

than whats the point of the sensor? If detonation happens, you are pretty much fucked

not exactly, once it detects it the ignition is retarded and detonation is no longer present.

i could be wrong about his, but the EFI books i have read havent said anything about a knock sensor being able to detect knock before the event occurs.

well yea, i'd assume a knock sensor cant detect knock before the event, its not a "pre-knock" sensor

i just want to know exactly what CEL 23 is telling me. knock? bad sensor? i guess if its a bad sensor i'd have to do some troubleshooting.

but if its in fact detecting knock, what are the causes? what can i do? i only use 93 gas (no 91 here).

its likely just a broken sensor. Just get under the car and inspect it.
