Default Boston Acoustics sub birthday present.. decent? or return?

So it's my birthday today and this morning I woke up to a Boston Acoustics sub along with a relatively large enclosure.

It's a 12" sub, labeled G1. Doing a quick google leads me to believe that this is the G112. Go figure. Anyway, do any of you know if this is a decent sub, or should I return it and get something else? The wattage seems a bit low, 50-200 watts. My parents don't really know too much about this stuff or how to shop around so I can't blame em if they got an inferior product. I just need something to add a bit of bass to my system, and probably some new speakers soon as well. Just using the stock GS-R sound system with an Alpine head unit >_<

If they are crap, what should I get instead that's in the price range? (I'm assuming they payed close to MSRP, which is around $100-110?) Maybe something used would make more sense?

Dunno yet. Just have the sub for now. I welcome recommendations though

Oh, quick question.. My headunit says 4x50 watt amp on it, does that mean I can power some decent speakers via my headunit, or is it not powerful enough?

4x50 is the max power output with lots of distortion. The usable power is more like 15 watts rms x4.

My head unit is 52W max power x 4 channels @ 4 ohms, and I run two 6.5" Sony Xplod speakers up front (220W peak, 55W RMS) and two 6x9 Sony Xplod speakers in back (240W peak, 80W RMS). I also have two 12" Sony Xplod subs (1300W peak, 380W RMS each) that are being run by an MTX Thunder TA 3401 Class D Mono amp that outputs 200W RMS into 4 ohms. The Sony Xplod 12" subwoofer is $110 and features a 4-ohm voice coil, polypropylene cone (a very strong material that can take a serious beating), gold-plated binding posts for maximum power and signal transfer, and a frequency response of 18Hz to 2,000Hz

Were is this getting the op?. stop being a posting *****.

To the op. If you are trying to get that highpower headunit to do its job. Run a 10 gauge power wire from the battery to the battery wire on the head unit. Or connect the accesory and battery wire to your ingnition harness. Example is the pioneer deh-p80mp that I sell and used in my gurlfriend car. Is has a built in 40 watt amp that can be run. Or you can use the 60 watt amp thats built in to it buy wire it up to the battery and flipping the switch under the radio.

Its pushing a set of TS-C160R for the front and TS-D161R for the rear no problem. And there is not the slightest signs of distortion. What headunit are you running?

Boston acoustics makes pretty good stuff...they have some of the cleanest sounding speakers for the price ranges they are in. right up there with JL audio. i have some of their home speakers and am picking up 2 of their amps as well. i really didn't know too much about them but i was fortunate enought to tour their facility in peabody Ma, and i was very impressed. they have 100% quality control there. if it doesn't meet spec perfectly the product gets tossed. the sub you have is their entry level sub. and honestly it should sound good... of course amp choice, wiring, and the type of sound you are looking for will affect the total level of enjoyment you recieve.

the music you listen to also has a lot to do with sub choice. over all...a single 12 should be ok for deep bass...you won't win any compititions, but you will get a much fuller sound.

btw the install bay there is amazing...all their products are tested in numerous cars before moving from prototype to production...

If you looking for a sub that will win you an SPL or SQ competition you should replace it.
If on the other hand you want to add some sub bass to a HU and 4 speakers, it will do the job very well, even if you add some more power, [4ch amp] to your system it will still do the job.
What is the model of your Alpine HU? 94

Kiss you parents and thank them for not buying you some cheap shyt, lol. you will be fine with thoses in your teg. And if it a hatch back your gonna have some nice bass. I would keep them and rock with it. Just find a nice amp with the correct rms output to match your subs. ditto to fcm and siksdb8 there post is 100% dead on

Just installed it yesterday.. picked up a pioneer 7200m amp from best buy. It's a mono that says 800w on it but the spec sheet said something a bit lower, so I guess 800w would be the peak. Hooked it all up my self. My first install ever, was simpler than I thought, just alot of bitch work involved.

My HU is an Alpine 9811.. kinda older, but it plays mp3s. Too bad it has no line in for my iPod. I'm pretty happy with the sub, glad to hear B/A is a decent brand, cause I really don't know the different brands out there yet. Hell, this is my first stick car, I've got alot of learning to do xD

Is there anything special I should do to keep from burning my sub, cause the amp is a bit high powered for it. (Spec sheet for the sub said 50-200w RMS, I think the RMS on the amp was around 350?)

Dont't go crazy with the gain on the amp. Adjust the crossover setting on the amp until you are satisfied with the tone of the bass. Since you have a teg you should get some really good bass. Learning to tune a system is just as important as a quality install. Good to hear that you are happy with your system.

Your Alpine CDA-9811 has an AUX input, even 2 AUX inputs, you need the Alpine KDC-121B or the KDC-410C adaptors, [plug into CD changer port] and the AUX has to be turned on in the HU, do you not have the owners guide? 94
