Mugen EK9 intake. Time to believe
Ok so i came across a Mugen EK9 intake at hmotorsonline. Steve sold it to me for a great price of $375. i couldnt pass it up. Im sure I could turn around and sell this thing for a mere $500 if it didnt work.
So i read all the latest mugen intake threads and comp97GSR said EK9 wont work for the GSR. but the weird thing is look at the picture below. Isnt that manifold a GSR manifold? so why wouldnt this work? I guess he meant the spacing? it might not fit? opps i guess that is wrong too.

Ok So here is where I started from. NSX Airbox.
great mod. recently got the Dali Racing super sucker mod which is a modded NSX top cover with a custom tube and mount for an apexi filter. works much better than my ghetto rigged AEM filter version
From L->R AEM w. modded stock gsr filter collar/ APEXi filter/ Mugen EK9 filter

A little stamp on the bracket that i didnt know was there.
Here is a size comparison to the NSX box
I too had to contend with ac lines and other things. while I havent had the pleasure of seeing a DC2 mugen intake in person I think the EK9 is bigger.
I had to remove the black tranny mount and the rubber shock. I plan to replace them with an AEM braket that i remember using for my AEM V2 CAI install when I had a Civic coupe.
Also in the pic you can see my DIY icebox tube.
And while I wont bore you with what i did here are the pics of it installed
So after the instal I had some minor hiccups. My S2K button start was still pushed in and locked so when I pressed the clutch my lights would dim and i woudl here a screeching sound. weird that the car will run and it only happens when i floored the Clutch. but I figured it out that by button was still locked and had to be pressed again.
Also i forgot to replace my coolant tank to its place and it was sitting on my heatshield and touching my ac fan so you can imagine the smell and the noise when i tried to use AC. I was so worried that it was from bending the AC lines. but no, im jsut an idiot for not putting things back.
But anyway I have to say this intake far exceeded my expectations. the nSX airbox is a great and inexpensive mod but this is better.
And the best news is we will get to find out by how much. I was impatient to get the mugen intake and to install it for my dyno appointment tmw morning. at 8am. I was planning to dyno my NSX airbbox vs, Spoon filter and stock paper filter for my GSR.
But now that mugen has stepped up to the plate. I willbe testing, in this order . . .
Mugen, NSX box, and Spoon filter. we will see. i have no doubt that mugen will be the champ but dont knock the NSX airbox so quickly it is a great mod and I liked it when i had it. im still gonna keep it but Real results will be taken tmw.

I've had both Mugen intakes, and I can assure you the DC2R intake is a lot bigger.

really? cause based on what i see in the pictures. The DC2 intake still lets the coolant tank sit infront. Luckily I had to relocate it for the NSX airbox. but as you can see there is no room for the coolant tank now.
it certainly seems so. In teh mid range and lowend torque is where I notice the difference. BUT the nSX box is louder at Vtec than the Mugen. interms of power who knows they are close plus my car is screaming at Vtec so I try to concentrate on controlling the damn thing haha instead of noticing the sublte differences in power.
gud job, gives me hope for my install. mine's going on an EG though. do you have a pic of the aem brace? i'm probably going to be needing one of those as well. btw the other guy was right, the dc2 mugen box is bigger, and the velocity stack pipe is bigger in diameter, 80mm vs 72mm for the ek9 pipe
AM I to assume that your intake box is just sitting in there? I don't see how it could be bolted down.. hence it doesn't fit... at least right. Your intake arm doesn't look right neither.

Comp97GSR. Yes this thing is so wedged in that It has no where to go so no need to bolt anything down. Yeah there are some fitment issues like the intake tube is askew. Need to figure out how to fix that. but It works. thats all that matters to me.

I dont think Comp97GSR was saying that you couldnt get it to "work", I think he was saying that it wouldnt properly install. You have it in your car and it works, but its half assed and not secure. Secure doesnt = wedged between some ****...

Looks like the intake arm is all kinked, which I would assume would hinder its performance.

The intake manifold is a LOT different.
It looks like it "fits", but not right. I've had this intake for a short while and when I tried to put it in I realized it wasn't going to fit. In order for you to bolt it down, you can't have ABS. You might have been able to squeeze it in because your early model ABS might have a smaller assembly there, but it wasnt gonna happen for me - and I have no AC or PS to get in the way.

I was going to say the same thing; plus where the velocity stack mates to the intake arm looks like it may not seal properly.
You need to try a different intake arm, something custom to give you a better fit.

no doubt. There mightbe a small loss of performance but I do notice a difference. and this was more of an experiment than a tried and true method. Now that I see the light of day about mugen intakes im hooked. I will try to sell this one and get a DC2 version.
Can someone tell me when Mugen redesigned their intake for te DC2? cause in my "I love DC2 type R" book the mugen intake looks simlilar to the one im using. I guess Gen 1?

I don't think there is any way you will get the newer DC2 version to fit in that area.

Interestingly, I dont think the top pic belongs to any 3rd gen Integra. Why would someone use a half sized civic radiator? I couldnt explain on the manifold, but neither could i explain on the tiny radiator too.
