Inner Tie Rod Boot
I need to order the inner tie rod boots that connect to the steering rack for my 93 lude. Problem is I can't seem to find the parts at any of the sites. I guess i need the lockrings too. Does anyone know the part numbers of these? Thanks.
I guess it's called the steering rack boot. I found it on this site http://shop.hondapartstore.com/?make=HO&year=1993 but i couldn't find it at http://www.hondaautomotivepart...h.jsp which is where i'm ordering some other stuff from so i wanted to find them there. Also, i still can't find the lockring.
Mark your alignment before you start, a paint marker drawn across the tie rod the jam nut and the tie rod end. Count the turns when you disassemble it, there are two different ways to take it apart, break loose the jam nut and unscrew the tie rod OR remove the tie rod end from the knuckle and unscrew it and the jam nut from the tie rod. I count the turns of both the tie rod and the jam nut. I back off the jam nut one full turn and then start disassembly and counting turns, including half turns getting near the end, put the jam nut back on in the same direction, dont flip it over.
Put the boot on the tie rod, put the larger clamp on the steering rack and boot, put the smaller clamp on the tie rod but not on the boot till the very end (unless you completely removed the tie rod end from the knuckle), screw on the jam nut and screw back the tie rod end and reinstall it to the knuckle if removed. Count turns and realign the paint marker line, tighten the jam nut. Install the smaller boot clamp (if tie rod end was not removed from knuckle).
If you plan on removing tie rod end from knuckle then dont hit the boot with your hammer, if you are going to use a pickle fork then get a new boot anyways, leave the castlated nut on loosely to protect the threads from your hammer and do not hit the threaded end to try to knock the tie rod end out of the knuckle, hit the side of the knuckle and shock the tie rod end loose. Align the cotter pin hole for easy access during reassembly and dont over torque the castlated nut. You may need a friend to pry the tie rod up or down (depending on type) while you smack the knuckle side.
