Default does anyone know why it is illegal to have an open air filter???

I don't know about this law in the U.S. but in Canada it a $385 ticket for an open air filter! Why is it illegal?? does it cause pollution? make a lot of noise?? it certainly doesn't make your car a lot faster! Is this law out there to indirectly curb street racing?? Easy way for the govt. to make money?? The reason why so many cops harass street racers is because there is a lot of money to be made and easy quota's to fill!! If you get caught for street racing....fine then you get a ticket, but if your just driving around and get pulled over like a criminal for an exhuast or clear lights that is just pure stupid!!! Imagine if street racers had no loud exhuasts, clear lights, fancy rims, what could the cops possibly pull them over for.....thats right nothing!!! and since the cops can give out tickets for these stupid things then there will be no more revenue in street racing and the cops would leave innocent ppl alone!!!

Well if people didn't act stupid and street race in the first place, we probably wouldn't have these problems.

But if you make an intake using a K&N in your stock air box w/ a tube that goes down behind the bumper light, it will work better than stock, probably at least as good as a CAI, and it looks stock so no hounding from cops.

The only reason I could think of would be noise vehicle harshness(NVH). That is the reason for the plastic stock muffler thing inside your fender.

I live in the US, but I downloaded a Canadian new clip, and they were saying that they had a death every day for a week because of street races. They are doing everything by the books now, no clear bumpers, no lowering, any "go fast" mod. Lowering isn't a go fast mod, but only racers and ganstas lower their cars

Later.

There's something about making your car "look" fast. If you lower your car, put a fart can on it, the clear lights, etc., you attract more attention. It also attracts the attention of the cops. Your modded car fits the profile of street racer so the cops ARE going to look at you. I was driving down a major street in my GSR and got beside another GSR that was all riced out. Sure enough, the cop stayed glued to his car following him into the mall parking lot. Never looked at me. That's why I will only modify internally (blower, clutch, gears, brakes, etc) and leave the outside of the car looking bone stock. I like my car fast and operate in stealth mode. My stocker GSR doesn't attract much attention and especially from the cops. Maybe less likely to get stolen too. When I keep up with or outrun modded GSRs and Type Rs, the drivers are surprised since they thought they could cream a "stock" GSR (so they thought).

I think it dates back to carbed cars and backfiring through the carb. When I was in high school (yup, I'm an old guy), a friend's dad bought him a brand new Pontiac GTO. He took out the air filter for more "ram air". With 250 mi. on his new car, stopped at a light and zapping the throttle, flames started shooting from under the hood. He just jumped out and watched it go up in flames. He then went home, torched the filter and added to the pile before the insurance company got involved. PRESTO! New car appeared!
