ok, heres the deal..i bought a fully built sohc vtec race engine..i put it in my 93 del sol and hooked up everything correctly..im am running my stock injectors and stock fuel rail, regulator,pump...ok, after i started it for the first time it sorta made a ticking/knocking noise...but ive bee told that race engines make a minor ticking sound(from cam or something) but when i took it out for a test drive i noticed that this engine ran like ****...!! no pick up at all..and it just drove very rough..and aside from the ticking sound it was making a pinging sound also....so i drove it to a shop and they told me it was either the rods or rod bearings...but im not sure what it is....does a built engine have to run off larger fuel management? it cant run off stock? someone please help.......write me at myka7500@aol.com or im me ..thanks

 

It's always good to upgrade the fuel output when building an engine. Now, if it's required to use a new fuel system depends on what compression is used and etc.
It sounds like someone sold you a junk motor. I would look around for a new bottom end or start rebuilding the bottom end. Your crank could be badly damaged from the rods/rodbearings, so you might need to replace it.

did you check the ignition timing? a race engine makes some funny nosies, but usually quiets down when it warms up. if you have messed up bearings you will hear the clack-clack sound all the time and will rise in frequency with rpm. if you think its detonating did you check the fuel pressures? maybe its something like that?
