Default Very Hard Shifting(H22a)

I'm having a hell of a time in my car. It's an OBD1 H22a with non lsd tranny. The problem is with the shift lever. It goes forward and backward with no problem, but left to right going from 2nd to 3rd, 4th to 5th, and same thing back down. I have to hit my shifter with the ball of my fist to get it into the middle and then it goes up into 3rd no prob, and then down into 4th is fine etc.

I disconected the right cable from the shifter and it is still hard to move left and right so I believe it is something in the shift box itself. I looks like there is a rectangular piece that the shift lever sits on and is supposed to rotate. Anyone have any experience with this getting jammed up somehow?

Any other ideas?

Could you elaborate a little more? It feels like its just stuck, not sure how the slave or master cylinder would affect that? The clutch engages and disengages perfectly. It's just moving the lever left and right that is hard.

Dude maybe I'm wrong, but what the heck would the master or slaver cylinder have to do with the shifter moving from left to right, the cylinders would only affect the clutch. The only thing I can think of since u already dissconnected the cable and still have the problem is what BDRphase2 said, try greasing ur shifter and that should help.

I got underneath the car and basically the lever sits on a pivot ball that is bolted to the shift box. It does looks like it could be greased so I'm going to go to autozone tomorrow and get some heavy duty grease and see if I can get it in there.

i had the EXACT problem when i boughta m2a4 tranny off a guy.. apparently in shipping the shift linkage housing was slightly damaged. it bent the shift arm on top of it (which is for left and right movement) and caused the movement to be like the tranny had 90 wt fluid in there.

i replaced the housing with the one from my old h23 tranny and it's like butter. in case you don't know what the shift linkage housing is, here's a pic:

my # 5 was very slightly bent and something was messed up with the tension (i think) on spring #7 and #8.

just something to consider.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out tomorrow. Looks like I can see it from the top if I remove the intake?

yes you can see if if you remove the intake.

btw, the only way i knew mine was bent was that the shift arm was bent inwards and didn't allow me to fit a 10 mm deep socket into the bolt closest to the arm and on my h23 it did. very hard to tell but made my 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear at least 1/2-1 inch over to the right when shifting.

My little bracket there doesn't seem to be bent, I was looking at it today. I was under the car though and feeling along my shift cables and right where they go over the cross member I can feel a break in the rubber on both of them. Unfortunately I can't get at an angle to see them. It feels like one of them is plastic under the rubber and one is metal/cable exposed. Could that be the problem?

you're right, the master and slave clutch cylinders have nothing to do with having the shifter going left to right. theres something wrong with the shifter assembly on top of the transmission housing, or somethings messed up inside your gearbox
