Default high rpm=grinding..kinda ?

well it first started as a rattle at 3000rpms, so i figured it was the heat shield as i opened the hood and would give it a rev and could pinpoint where it was coming from. i didn't have time then, or lately to get in there and tighten/remove it. now yesterday, it was gone, no rattle, but 5 minutes into driving, while switching gears at around 3000-3500rpm it makes a loud grinding/sqreeching noise... it did it sometimes while just crusing around 2000rpm but not so much, mainly just before shifting up at higher rpms. i turn the car off at the mall, and go shopping... come back and same thing, drives fine for 5 or so minutes then that loud *** sound is back. im wondering if you guys have any ideas as to what it could be? i plan to raise it up tommorow and take a look underneath and all around but would love to have some advice as to where to look more more importantly. could it still be the heat shield?. thanks.

Most likely your cat heat shield but you said you checked that out already, remove it, if it still rattles, then you had what i had i bet..
I have a 90 integra that had stock exhaust, and the pipe from the cat to the muffler was f'ed up and made that raddle crap at certain rpm's.. Mine was the resonator pipe, best thing to do is buy a catback if thats the problem... take it to something like merlins or some muffler place and ask them what that noise is from
Also ive heard it being the headers... My personal experience was a screwed up resonator pipe...
What model integra do you have?

i have a 96 LS. i havn't checked the heat shield, thats the thing i havn't had time. but it switched from the rattle to this weird *** sound. the rattle is gone, like i said it doesn't kick in until 5 minutes or so into driving and i can rev 7's without hearing a thing before that..

mine was a very incosestant noise also, but I bet its your heat shield, mine was soo rusted it pulled right off
I dont know how else to help u besides hit the pipe with a hammer and see if its the pipe and if its easy enough to take off just remove the heat shield
