I had the same problem with a ford escort. Basically, I removed the seatbelt motors, opened them up even though they say DO NOT OPEN. I figured out how it worked first (drawing a diagram might help), took the ratcheting assembly out and pull the belt all the way out. I found loose change, straw wrappers, etc in there, and that is what was causing the lock-ups. Removed and reassembled, and they worked perfect.

my suggestion: take one of the seat belt units out and see what you see. go from there.

If they're broken, they have a lifetime replacement from honda, I believe.

The problem is he said they worked fine before he removed them. The belts can be replaced(free) if found defective by a dealer. They might not do it(for free),since they have been tampered with/removed from the car.Just be sure first, cause those belt set-ups arn't cheap and then the labor charge.

what if the seatbelts no longer retract like they used to? not defective, just worn. probably not a free replacement then?

mine do not retract unless you help them along.
