That would be the last major mod you could do without doing a lot of work(pulling the engine)...since you have too many miles, nitrous would be a bad idea. Port and polish would be a lot of work. Wires, ignition, etc dont make much difference. But i havent know anyone whos put perf. cams in a dohc non-vtec...theres quite a difference in dohc vtecs.

dude, i have too many miles and little funds... and so? i still went turbo!

those cams aint really gonna do too much for non-vtec engines. youre pretty much running out of boltons. i think youre better off goin forced induction. try the cams out and see if it works out for your setup. get the mild cams... not the wild... gonna make your engine sputter at idle.

i was thinking about getting crower cams but i don't think that the gains would be worth the money. i have given up and i'm waiting to go turbo. if you do decide to get the cams, get atleast 403's. anything lower would be a waste.

Mileage isnt the deciding factor on whether or not to run nitrous, it is the condition of the engine. As long as it has good compression/leakdown results you are fine.
Onto cams. If you want cams, at least get 403's. Now 403s and 404s require the use of their valvesprings and retainers. If you want their full potential, youll want a chipped ecu and some tuning.

403's require valvesprings and retainer upgrades too... news to me, time for 404's

neither of the cams requre the ti-retainer.....you can use the stock ones but obviously the ti-retainers are stronger and lighter......

but you must use their dual valve springs.....

I use the Crower 62402 cams and I love them. You cannot tell a difference in the idle, low end torque is still intact and it pulls way harder in the top end.

I run 15.1's at the track with only cams, header, exhaust and fpr. I also recently dyno'd 138hp at the wheels, and I know I would make more with the 403s. That's on an OBDII car too.

....

If I were you I would get the 403s and springs.

I'll be running a setup almost identical to Halo's who made 165whp w/404's and other goodies. I'll keep you guys posted how I like the 404s

with the money youve used on the boltons and valvetrain upgrade... youre better off using that money to go turbo. thats exactly the point we are getting at. looks like you feel the need for speed.

True. I spent a heck of a long time figuring out what I was going to do. But in the end I realized I wanted to do something properly. Now if I did put that money towards a turbo, I'd be running a getto turbo kit that'll give me a heck of a lot of problems in a short while from not having the budget to upgrade pistons, rods, fuel management etc... I couldn't make my powerhungry budget sky high, I am a student after all, so I chose to do my LS. It'll all be going in just after monday, hope to have it ready by next friday (got a header in UPS). I'll tell you guys all about it!

I have the 62403's with the single valvesprings and aluminum retainers. The valvetrain is goot to 7500. Total cost of the setup was about $700, wasinstalled by me. I dont think $700 will go very far twoards a turbo kit. If you want the cams, go for it. With the 404's your car will idle like a harley

Does anyone have experience with the Crane non-vtec cams? Does crane cams make good products?

dlplayboy, I would have to agree with you on that. Before i went FI, I was trying to decide if i should dump all this $$ into bolt ons. The gains for the money just arent there. I decided to save my money and buy a drag 3 kit. Its a lot of money compared to $650 for some cams, retainers and valve springs, but trust me, its well worth saving that money for that gains you get from a turbo.

Think about getting a VTEC head, there would be a lot more potential if yuo had VTEC, however its not an easy bolt on.

Id say a 16% increase in performance (404 cams) when properly tuned is worth $700... as opposed to the 5-10% or so increase with $1000 worth of I/H/E...

I plan on doing a full upgrade to the block and head (minus the oversized valves):

-Crower 404 cams
-Crower spring and retainer kit
-Crower Economy Billet rods
-SRP pistons (stock CR or slightly above stock)
-oil pump with raised oil pressure (shim the spring with washer)

Should be good to rev to 8,100 rpm cam redline with the above setup... lighter mass of parts is a good thing...

What setup do you have planned? What cyl head are you running along with those cams?
