Hi, I just purchased some wheels and I'm in need of tires for them. This will be used for my daily driver. I would like to stick with all season tires but I guess using a summer tire in California isn't too bad. The car will not be used in any off-road contests, strictly street driving/commuting to school and work.

So my choices of tires are:

Federal SS595 - $216 mounted and balanced
Kumho Ecsta 711 - $229 mounted and balanced

Tires are 205/40/17

What's important to me:

price
longevity
traction
road noise
wet performance

Both of those tires are absolute crap and not worth buying at all.

If you want a really good tire in 205/40-17, for a few bucks more, you can get the Kumho Ecsta SPT. The SPT is an excellent tire - very good on dry pavement, awesome in rain, and lasts a long time. The Tire Rack sells them for $59 each plus shipping, and Discount Tire sells them for $67 including free shipping. Kumho has a $40 rebate on a set of four, so you're actually paying $10 less per tire than that. Even with mounting and balancing, you should still come out under $300, and you'll have much much MUCH better tires than the two crappy tires you mentioned.

Hi nsxtasy, I read your other reviews about hte 711s on a few different threads.

Do you know much about the Kumho Ecsta SPT? If so, please give me your impression on them. I looked at user reviews on Discount Tire's website and I'm getting mixed opinions. One person said they are really loud, a couple others say they're quiet. One says they lasted 4k miles. Another is on them with 33k.

Have you had these tires? How long did they last? Were they noisy? It seems like traction on these are pretty good. I think you've convinced me to definitely at least consider these. Let me know

 

if anything is true, SPT is not noisey by any mean(well, when they are new at least)

I rolled 3000 miles on my set, on the drive wheel, the little logo is gone already.

I am think they could last 15 to 20K on my S, due to various reason the back tires will be gone twice as fast as the front, you shouldn't be worry about this if you have other honda tho'.

not as grippy as my stock S02 but for 400 dollar i couldn't complaint much, they are alot alot better than the old 712 that i used to have, in matter fact I have the 711 before too..like 5 years ago

Nsxtasy, not sure it just me or the tire wall is kinda of flexing on the spt, tipical kumho tirew wall flex?

I did not have a full track day on those rubber so i can't say for sure

 

SPT hands down. I have had the Federal SS595 and the Kumho 711 and now I have the SPT.

I can tell you that the SPT out perform both of the other tires by a long shot. I would really consider getting the SPT!!!!! I have very pleased with the dry grip and the wet traction. I did an autocross event and I finished 3rd in my category and the tires did what I excepted them to do perform as well as they could. Yes better tires do exist but for the price nothing comes close.

If you really can't get the SPT, I would suggest the SS595 over the 711. They have much better grip then the 711 and are a little better in the rain then the 711.

But before that get the SPT... DO THE RIGHT THING!

I've driven and ridden in other people's cars using these tires, both on the street and on the track. On dry pavement, they grip very well. In pouring rain, they are awesome. They are not particularly noisy (although these were all fairly new and most tires get noisier as they wear). I'm not sure about how long they will last because no one I know has used them up yet, but their treadwear rating is 320, and comparing that to other Kumho tires and those of other brands, I think you'll find that they typically last 30-40K miles and maybe more (although obviously this will vary from one vehicle and driver to another). If I were buying street tires today and cared about value as well as performance, this is the one I would buy. (In fact, this is the one I WILL buy, next time I need to buy tires on my Integra.)

I know what happened. You have to be careful with Discount Tire's website. When you enter their website, you have to make sure to click on the lower left where it says:



If don't do that, they show you the price at your local store, which is higher. That's why you got the $96 price. If you make sure to click on that logo where it says "Discount Tire Direct", it still shows the price for ordering them to be shipped as $67 in 205/40-17 (with free shipping)

To get the lower, shipped price rather than the price at your local store, make sure to click on that logo. After doing that, make sure that the domain name in the website address in your browser window is http://www.discounttiredirect.com and not http://www.discounttire.com.

just placed my order, $268 is the total. minus the $40 rebate, total will be $228. Friend has a semi-hook up at a tire place, so mounting and balancing should cost $20. The grand total, $248 installed!

 

where'd you get that $268....at discount tire? I'm been following up on this and just tried to order from them (shipped to your doors) and my total came out to $356.

This is for some 215/40/17 BTW

yeah i would have preferred 215s, but they're quite a bit more expensive, and the 205s work fine, just a tad smaller than stock in wheel overall diameter

Yes, there's a $22 difference (per tire) between 205/40-17 and 215/40-17.

Remember, if you have an Integra or a pre-'01 Civic, 205/40-17 is the best matching 17" size for your car...
