Vehicle Speed Sensor
We did a JDM b18b swap about a month ago and today the CEL came on and the speedo quit working. We looked and the cable had fallen out of the tranny. We put it back in, yet the speedo still didnt work and still had a CEL. We pulled the code. Code 17 for the VSS.
We did some more looking and it seems in the Helms manual that the VSS is located in the gauge cluster. But yet it just shows how to test it. Is this something that we can change out from our old cluster or does this mean we need a whole new gauge cluster. We have the JDM one now so i would really like to not have to purchase another lol. any input is appreciated

Check to see if the cable (speedo) is not broken inside and if it has the key way at the end of the cable (part that goes into the transmission).

the cable appears to not be broken i had on hell of a time getting it back out of the tranny and i looked at the end of the cable and saw what appeared to be like a key that would keep the cable in the tranny. I still need to take out the cluster but i was hoping that the tranny end was the prob. if the cable is still connected to the back of the cluster and the vss is the prob. can that be replaced or will i have to get a new cluster?

Does it spike up and down?
You inspect the VSS gear?
Take the VSS out, put a drill on to the gear side (with the cable attached) and spin the drill and see if it works correctly.
