do a safety check, make sure no major oil leakes or water leaks and also that you have enough fluids in the car, check tires and the air pressure in them...just do a walk around and make sure there isnt something that looks like it could potentially go out, IE a leaky hose or worn brakes.

i'd probably just make sure your hoses are in good shape, but a 400 mile trip isn't that much. your car should be fine.

Indeed, highway travel is nothing, much less stressful on your car than city driving.

Ya, check fluids, air pressure. That's about it.

I personally travel a lot for work. 400mi is a daily occurance for me some weeks. One suggest I would have is to swap your mini spare with a full sized one if you have one. It will save you major headaches if you get a flat. Maybe a bottle of water or two if it will get warm, sunscreen to try to prevent 'driver's arm" That's about it.

If you travel on backroads that the dead of winter at night then I have many more suggestions for you....just ask

Cheers.

how many miles or long do you guys go before taking a break or stopping?

My friend takes like a 30 minute break each time he has to stop for gas. (traveling from northern california to los angeles)

Eh, you should take a break (once or twice) on a trip that long... how long is it, 5 hours at highway speed traffic, it'll be like 5-6 hours, I would stop once or twice though because of 2 reasons....you'll need to pull over for gas at some point or another (probably around 1/4 tank is a good time assuming you left at full), and pull over at a gas station, get out, stretch, walk around a bit, buy a twinkie & soda (something with caffiene preferably to prevent road hypnosis) (if you don't know what road hypnosis is look it up...)...get back in, and go the rest of the way O.o
