FIX MY DAMN VTEC PROBLEMS!

I have had these problems forever. Its a 98 H22a in a 96 accord. When VTEC hits about 5200rpm the engine gets really loud but I feel absolutely no power. Actually, I probably feel a drop in power. I have checked the oil pan for dents, opened up the vtec solenoid to see if the filter was clogged and it isnt, opened up the top part to see if the pin moves and it does, and just changed the oil to make sure its topped off. All this was done yesterday.

Mods:
crower stage 2 cams +retainers and springs
an-r header
intake, exhaust
msd ignition
lightened flywheel, action clutch
other general junk

Couple questions, when you hear the loud sound (and its really loud with the cams) does that mean that there is enough oil pressure for the pin to move? Should I get an oil pressure gauge and check the pressure?

First one to suggest something that leads to my VTEC working will get $50 through paypal instantly. HELP ME! This has been going on for over a year but I have had to go to school in another country so I couldnt really do anything with it. It started happening before I got the cams which was my latest mod last summer or thereabouts. Thanks

if your runing crower stage 2's untuned then first of all your probably runing lean hence why you don't "feel" vtec,
second of all the sound your hearing could be just the IABs opening up.

does the car rev to redline?
have you tried everything in https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=830163

edit: chris you beat me to it haha^^^

if you are still running a stock ecu, i would suggest putting a wideband on it and see if its running too lean.

if you can hear the vtec engage then that means the oil pressure is fine.

so you're saying your vtec is working or not? if vtec is engaging then you have fulfilled these 3 things:

oil pressure
oil temperature
load on the engine

the actual vtec mechanism working and making power are two separate matters! what is your engine control setup?

Thanks for such quick replies. Yes my car revs to redline just doesnt get any power. Most everything on that link was done except checking the actual voltages through the solenoid and checking the oil pressure using the gauge which I dont have and will have to rent. The VTEC pressure switch (2 pin) was also purchased when I got the engine so I wouldnt imagine it was bad since when I put on my vafc it wasnt used anymore. When I got my cams last summer I tuned it with the LM-1 wideband unit and my vafc. I dont have access to a dyno within 2-3 hrs. Ill try testing the oil pressure today I guess.

Haha, man $50 is nothing if this gets fixed. Im losing so much power and the car doesnt even pull to redline even though it goes up there.

Note, my vtec was working when I got the car and had nitrous for a period. It just stopped one day

so tell me this are you using the vafc to controll vtec engaugement. because i hate troublshooting vtec problems when there is an aftermarket controler forcing the solinoid to engergize even when the ecu doesn't want it to.

tell me your not using the vafc in any way to engague or control vtec. tell me that wire is disconnected and not even near the main engine harness.

no check engine lights ... hmm .. i would check to make sure you IABS are opening. pop the hood get under there and locate the flapper and rev the motor and see if the flapper moves

Clogged cat?

Cam gear(s) off a tooth?

Ignition timing off?

(I'm assuming A/F is ok with your wideband tuning, and compression checks ok.)

I also would agree with that and you should probably try hooking up a light or something to make sure the vtec solenoid is in fact getting power right before the solenoid after any connectors

not thread jacking but i just tried unhooking the vacuum from the diaphram and i took the car out, it has lost a little down low but it now pulls right up to redline whereas before it wouldn't, if anyone remembers some previous posts i made i had a problem with a lack off power over 100, well this has sorted it.

they must have been staying closed, just have to figure out why. i had the car at idle and pulled the vacuum on and off and seen the flapper going in and out, so i have the line connected up again and i'm hoping that it just needed freeing up. if they're still screwed the next time i drive it then i'm going to have to ask you guys what could be messing it up!
