I have a 93 civic that the engine wont even crank. What are the possabilities?

Could it be the starters selonoid? or the starter itself? When i try to crank the engine, there is no sound at all that comes from the engine bay, its 100% silent.

 

hows your battery? do ur lights turn on?..try push starting it..or tapping on the starter as u turn it over.

 

Check battery voltage, with car off, should read around 12 volts. Check for any blown fuses, specifically the main fuse(80 amp). If all checks fine then your starter is the probable cause.

yeah the voltage is fine. the lights dont dim at all...its a new battery i put in 2 weeks ago.

what im thinking about doin is taking the starter off and putting a 12v directly to the solenoid where the starter wire goes(runs from the ignition)...ill see if that works out...if it doesnt turn on the starter then i i replace it, correct?

 

I'm not positive here, but I don't believe it's a good idea to put power to the starter un-mounted, and drive out the pinion. I know on some cars it can internally damage the solenoid or starter itself. Also, keep in mind that just because the battery is only 2 weeks old, does not mean it's guaranteed to be at 100%. That means you've only had 2 weeks of charging and draining it, making the electrolyte solution still relatively weak in comparison to one with some more usage out of it. Like krispyego said, check all your fuses and electical connections before replacing the starter. It could very well be a fault in the ignition wiring too. (though doubtful). I'd just hate to see you jump to a starter before ruling out all the other possibilities.

 

I would try to roll start it first. Have someone push the car, put it in first, and dump the clutch. Make sure you are going fast enough. Try that, then report back.

thats what i was thinking...what I might do is run a wire from the S terminal on the solenoid so its long enough to hang down...then ill remount it back on the car then the end of the extended wire form the solenoid terminal, i can touch that to the battery +. i dont want to try to roll start it because my clutch is almost gone too:-/ so i dont want to try that as the first resort.

 

Instead of trying things the hard way, and sinse you can't roll start it. BUY A NEW STARTER. If that doesnt work, return the starter and figure out wtf it is.

corroded battery terminals can cause a no start too
