Default DIfferent gearbox or modified gearset in JDM 96spec?

hey ppl....i have a 96 spec jdm type r, now one thing that seems to be different is the gear ratios...when shifting at redline from first to second the revs drop back to bout 5700-5800 from 8500...all other r's ive seen only fall back to bout 6200?? could it be a different gearbox or gearset? any help appreciated cheers !

If it's a JDM Transmission, it should be 4.786 Final Drive. Your gears should be as follows:

1st Gear: 3.2
2nd Gear: 2.1
3rd Gear: 1.4
4th Gear: 1.0
5th Gear: 0.7

1st Gear the RPM should drop back down to 5,200RPM (Let's say you're shifting at 8,000RPM exactly), 2nd Gear should drop down to 5,500RPM, 3rd Gear should drop down to 5,600RPM, and 4th Gear should drop down to 6,000RPM.

USDM ITRs came with 4.4 Final Drive. With the exact same gearing, aside from 4th Gear (1.1) and 5th Gear (0.8). Which makes the RPM drop less drastic, varying by 400RPM in from 3rd Gear, and 100RPM from 4th Gear.

When I shift my USDM ITR from redline (8,500RPM), it drops right back into the VTEC crossover, around 5,800RPM-6,000RPM.

Perhaps the other ITRs you've seen had modified Final Drives? ATS and SRR (And other companies, I'm sure) make 4.9 Final Drives, which drastically changes how fast the driver can move through the gears, and also makes the drop down point less drastic. It's a VERY good modification, I've heard even better than supercharging. Which is why I plan on doing it in the near future, but that's off topic, haha.

Does your Transmission still have the markings from the factory? Does it still say 4.7 on the casing? Only way to know for sure is to have it cracked open, and inspected... Which I really don't think you want to do, haha.

That's about all the information I can supply... Maybe someone else can shed some light. But give us some more information about the car, that'd help out.

Not to mention that the final drive doesn't change the spacing between gears at all. The rpm "drop" is exactly the same no matter what final drive you use.

A 96 spec transmission is EXACTLY like the U.S. transmission. You should have nothing to worry about.

96 spec = usdm final and ratios.

if you want something "better" then upgrade to a 4.7 or 4.9 final.

You like laughing, don't you? Haha, so do I, it's all good.

But you're right, I had no idea until I was called on it, and researched it. Stupid me. Oh well, that's how you learn.
