Default help with valve cover bolt

I was replacing a friend's timing belt and some other things and was using an impact to remove the bolts. I put almost everything back in with the air ratchet so there's no problems with overtightening. In the middle of it another friend comes over to check it out and wanted to help, but he didn't know really how to do it. I didn't think anything of it and asked him to put the valve cover back on while I put the lower timing belt cover on. Valve cover's easy, nothing should go wrong. So he grabs the impact and tries to put the valve cover back on and uses the impact to tighten the first bolt. Needless to say, the 700 lb ft was a little high and just snapped the bolt off into the head. It snapped off far enough down so that there's nothing to grip and twist it out. How do I get that stupid bolt out?

If you can visibly see the bolt...magnetic pick up is the best bet. Hell, I use one even when I don't need to

Sorry for the confusion, the bottom of the bolt is screwed in to the cylinder head where it goes. It screwed in all the way, then since the impact is too powerful for it and doesn't really slow down when it starts getting resistance, it just broke the bolt off, leaving the bottom part screwed in. I need to get the screwed-in part out somehow.

Do you have any pictures?

If it is any nut holding the valve cover on, the stud can easily be replaced and a new nut put on it. If it is a bolt holding the cams down, you will have to drill it out.

I'll get a picture of it later today so you guys can see what I'm talking about. It's on my friend's car so I'll have to go over there later. The nut is not the problem. The problem is the STUD that the nut goes on. That stud broke off, and the bottom part is still in the cylinder head. I can't get it out because there's nothing to grip onto to turn it.

Sears has a very nice self tapping ez out that you use with a reversable drill, it is the best ez out I have ever used, there are two types, this one is just one piece reverse drill sharp double cutting edge, they also have a two piece type that drills a hole and then grabs with the ez out portion, this one requires a reversable drill also. They both come in a pocket sized black carrying case. Go get one or both, watch the metal shavings also.

if it is one of the outer studs, you can just unscrew and replace them. take off the valve cover, and look underneath the stud. they just screw right out with a socket.

The part is actually IN the cylinder head, not just under the valve cover. Think of it like taking a bolt, cutting off half the threads, and screwing the threads somehow way down into the hole so there's nothing sticking out. You could actually almost screw another stud down right on top of it, but anyways, that's what I'm trying to get out.

try drilling it out, and re-tapping it, its probably the best, since most EZ outs arent really that long to get down into deep boars. usuially the tapred part will get stuck if its deeper then 3/4 or 1" deep.
