Crankpulley and dizzy
I am doing a mini me and how would i set the dizzy timing with a timing gun if i cannot read the marks on my crankpulley *rusted*?? I mean the marks that you have to use to set dizzy timing. Not the tdc mark.
The timing marks are grooved into the pulley, so even if the colored marks aren't there, you should still have something to go off of. If the pulley is on the motor, I would pull it off, look for the marks and use some liquid paper or some white ink marker and redo the timing marks.
If your crankshaft has the TDC center mark, that is the mark you use to set the timing. That and the mark on the timing belt cover, when it's involved.
In putting in your dizzy, just set the crank to TDC, then set the dizzy to point to the number one plug wire and put the distributor into the housing, with the adjustment's set to allow some travel both directions. That will be good enough to get it running and from their you can set the timing after the car is started. You do need to make sure that when the TDC is up, that it's the number 1 cylinder that's up, not a different one. If the valve cover is off, you can just turn the crankshaft over until the timing mark is lined up and the valves for number one are all closed.
