is this d16z6 worth it?
I have a 90 crx si with 180k on it, I can get a 94 ex long block for $175. The motor has 130k on it. Is it work it for me to buy it and put the head on my d16a6? My current motor is running ok, just needs a new clutch, but 175 I can't beat it.
so use the whole d16z6 not just the head? Wouldn't I get a little more HP (bump in compression) by putting the d16z6 head on the d16a6 block? Or is it not worth the trouble. Also what should be replaced in a rebuild.
I think (not a mini me expert by any means) the A6 mini me does have higher compression. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Either way you may as well consider the rebuild because both motors have relatively high mileage. Either way you will need to convert to OBD1. As far as a rebuild, things you may want to consider would be pistons, rings, rods, bearings, etc. possibly even head work. Just fine a reputable machine shop for the rebuild. It all depends on how much you have or are willing to spend.

I have a Z6 mini-me and it will give you a boost in compression to around 10:1. However given the option of dropping the complete Z6 I would go that way. It will probably be cheaper, and last longer. Doing the mini-me also throws you cam timing off, which you will have to work with to get it tuned right.
For the wiring issues do one of two things.
1-Buy the zdyne one wire conversion. This set up is VERY easy, all you'll need to do is run one wire for VTEC. You'll need to use your A6 distributor (z6 will NOT work), A6 one wire O2, and A6 injectors. It would be best for performance to use the Z6 intake manifold with the A6 injectors. This one will cost you about 350. Here is the zdyne site.

2-Buy a OBD0 to OBD1 conversion harness, get a P28 ECU from a 92-95 ex or si 5-speed, use the Z6 distributor, injectors and 4-wire O2. You will need to run wire to the P28 for the vtec oil pressure, vtec solenoid, 4-wire O2, and remove the injector resistor box. Assuming that you already have the complete long block and just need the conversion harness and ECU this option should cost you around 250-300 bucks.

I would just use the whole motor. And unless you KNOW it needs a rebuild, don't bother with it. A Honda motor with 130000 miles typically does not need a rebuild. Hell, even my stock DX motor with 243000 miles on it runs just fine and burns no oil. But one important thing to consider is the management. It is a well known fact that the SOHC VTEC motor does not like the stock PM6 SI ECU. If you use this ECU, don't expect your motor to perform much better than a stock SI motor. The Zdyne ECU is one way to go. But running the P28 has several advantages. One advantage is that you don't have to deal with those pesky distributer mounting issues. You just use the D16Z6 distributer. The other is California smog (if this is an issue). If the ref is doing there job, an SOHC VTEC with the stock SI configuration will NOT pass.
