Default shifting and shifter-related problems

ok, i know some of these might be transmission-related but i want other people's input on this:

1. My shifter rattles when im going 80mph+ (probably my 2.5" exhaust hitting it?)
2. I can move my shifter side to side with a good amount of play while in gear.
3. 1st gear doesnt always engage. I have to release the clutch and press again.
4. Reverse grinds 80% of the time i go into it.
5. I hear my shift linkages rattling from underneath (maybe my exhaust again?)

maybe i just need new bushings or maybe im missing them. but when i installed my short shifter, everthing looked fine down there. i've been driving this car for a year now and i've had these problems ever since. but it just now started to annoy me. i wanna know what the problem is and how to fix it. any ideas???

My guess would be that your short shifter is hitting an exhaust hangar. As far as 1st and reverse being difficult gears to get into, perhaps its time for a new clutch? Also check your MC and slave cylinder for leaks.

1. Probably exhaust like you said
2. That's normal
3. Do you mean it's hard to push it into 1st sometimes? That's normal, if it's doing that and you let the car roll forward or backward a little it should make it easier to put it in 1st.
4. Make sure you're not rolling while putting it in reverse, 1st and reverse don't have synchros so you have to be at a complete stop
5. Probably exhaust again... but check for worn bushings and stuff

I'm pretty sure my clutch is still fine since i had it changed a year ago and it's always had the same problems even when the clutch was brand new. i cant check for leaks in the master/slave cylinders cuz i dont have a hydraulic clutch. i have a DA...it's cable.

2. I dunno about normal. I've driven other car's and their gearbox feels a hell of a lot stiffer than mine. Mine is so loose I feel like i could stir it around haha

3. Yea that's what I meant. I already know how to handle that problem. I just wanted to know if that was normal.

5. I'll check whenever I change out my exhaust in a few weeks.

Thanks for the responses

You might need to grind one of the hangars down on your catback exhaust. This would be my guess if you have a new clutch. As for reverse being hard to get into, you should press the clutch in and out before you try to put it into reverse. This usually works w/ older cars.

well this is how it goes

1. your exhaust MIGHT be hitting it but it may also be your bushings they may be worn out. my exhaut is 2.25 and when I shift to reverse and reverse hard i can feel the exhaust hit it. yours might be the same
2. your bushing kit or short shift is not installed correctly
3. may need to refill or renew your tranny fluid
4. happens to all of us
5. could be linked to issue #1

maybe that helps out but dont quote me on those.
