Default tranny leak - doesn't stop!

Here's the deal: got done with a timing belt/clutch/flywheel/tranny change and noticed that the bottom of the tranny was covered in green fluid (honda mtf).

so i try to trace the leak and it looks like it's coming from everywhere. so i replace the drivers side axle seal and it helped. no fluid on the driver's side of the tranny. however fluid is still all over the bottom of the tranny, the top near the shift linkage (near #9 bolt), all over the front (near #12), near the axle seal(#13) and from driving it, all over the exhaust/cat/suspension.

so i replace the passengers side with a honda seal and still a leak. it doesn't leak on teh ground very much at all, it just coats the entire tranny from the middle to the back all the way up near the shift linkage. i assume a bad axle seal and a very fast spinning axle is causing it to squirt.

i also noticed that the bottom of the tranny has small hairline cracks everywhere around it. but i've seen a bunch of other trannys like that (including my previous one which was worse) and never had a problem.

any help MUCH appreciated! i'll get pics after work.

UPDATE: looky what I found. Isn't this weird? can this little space squirting out fluid cause that all that fluid to coat the tranny? it also seems that it's coming from the shift linkage bars. (from the out the oil seals or out the split between the tranny and the shift linkage housing.)

it's obviously running down the linkage and onto the axle and the rest of thet tranny.

all of the tranny in these 2 pics are coated:

look how the fluid on the boot is only on the upper parts of the boot. weird:

side note. anybody know how to get those spring pins out of the shift linkage bars?

no, mine is definitely tranny fluid. i think the problem is the shift linkage housing or the bushings for the shift linkage rods(#15,16)

i just need to figure out how to get these pins out (#17)

#17 is a spring pin....basically you just have to press it in and out. I tried to replace all the seals in the cover just like you are looking at, but I realized I had to press that pin out and I needed a lock washer from Honda to put it all back together so I said forget it. I believe the lock washer is #14.

well, i'm pretty sure it's leaking from there so i have to fix it. that pin is pretty small. i don't see how you're going to use a press on that thing. would hammering it with an appropriate punch work?

luckily, i have these seals and extra parts from my reliable h23 tranny. maybe i'll just use those.

Well, I don't mean you actually have to use a press, just that you have to have some pressure to push that thing out. A punch should be fine if you can safely get that thing in a vise or something to hold it good.

if you fill that thing correctly there is no way its leaking out that high on the casing, seems to me like you have way too much mtf in there

oh and btw, mtf is not green at all man, it looks like synthetic oil

i actually thought of having too much mtf in there. i think hatwhat happened was that i actually had a big leak from the axle seals. after i fixed them, i put some fluid in but noticed it was still coated. i had to drive the car and i went to work and it seemed like i lost a lot of fluid and i couldn't check in the parking lot of where i work. so i just put some in and hoped that it was enough to get home. maybe i way overestimated how much i leaked and filled it to much, causing it to leak some more. the tranny isn't really wet anymore but the tranny side motor mount is.

i wonder where coolant is leaking? i just checked all hoses and everything is dry. i can't tell if what's coating the tranny is coolant or tranny fluid. i guess i'll have to get under there, wipe it with a rag and smell it to see.

man, fixing this old *** car is beginning to wear on me.

Well, atleast at the end of the day you can say "its mine" and know that its your money and efforts going into the car...

BACK FROM THE DEAD. guys, i've ordered the seals and will be putting them in shortly. i noticed some of the leak is coming from between where the housing (#6) meets the tranny. in the helms, it says to liquid gasket it and then put the housing on and tighten it and let it dry. i've done it twice but fluid still leaks out between there.

should i be using some special sealant? anybody else have this problem?

My bet is its the rear main seal, I had the same problems and that seal fixed them.

I always use hondabond from honda. You can get it from your local honda dealership. You only need 2 qt. of MTF in there. Don't put any more than that in.

Ya, if you put too much in it can foam up and come out the vent at the top when you get on the highway.

well, i definitely know that it's not that i have too much fluid b/c it was very low when i checked it and persisted to leak.

as for the main seal, would fluid be leaking down around the flywheel cover? how would fluid from the rear main seal travel upwards and out of that little housing?

The vent on the top of the trans. could be clogged. This causes pressure to build as the trans. heats up forcing fluid to leak out of any of (or all of) the seals. This would be a cheap and easy fix if it is the problem.

i take it the vent you are talking about is that long skinny brass looking metal piece sticking out of the housing? it does have a rubber thing inside of it with a small hole. maybe i should take that rubber cap right off to see.

i know people who overfill them for better shifting, but they complain of it pushing past the seals, so i'd have to say yes
