Default MUGEN head gasket's funny...

I recently got my hands on a Mugen head gasket and i look at it. I also did an inspection on a stock ITR head gasket. it looks identical. I know this might sound weird but i started to think that the mugen head gasket is basically the ITR head gasket with one less ply. I know the stock ITR one is 3 ply and the mugen was only 2. I got a new ITR gasket and and compared it to the Mugen one and it looks the same. the only thing that was missing was a few numbers on the edge of the OEM one and 1 less ply. Anyone out there know whatsup with it?

Possibly? I don't know. They both look the same! I mean of course it should look the same because its a head gasket and in order for it to fit correctly it would follow the same design as the OEM one. Its just funny cause when i was looking at it, it occured to me that it might be the same thing with one less ply and the mugen tag on the cover of the package and the price.

that's the whole point. With one less ply its like milling your head however much 1 ply of that material is.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that they are basically the exact same gasket...minus one layer of course.

yup, 1 less ply is what you're paying for... i dunno about material... if it looks the same in color and texture, it may just be the same deal minus a layer... but as i said, that is what you purchased, so its all good.

I wouldn't surprise, a lot of Mugen and Spoon parts are just modified stock OEM parts. But as long as you are happy paying the $$ for it and it work well, that all it matter.

Isn't the Mugen made up of 2 silver layers?
I know the silver layer on OEM is thinner than the outer black layers.
I think the black ones were 12 thou each, and the silver was 8 thou.

If this is true, then the Mugen would be equivalent to milling 15-16 thou off the head.

I haven't done much research on this, so I am not sure. But I remember mine was silver when I got one like 3 years ago.
