Why do people call 1988-1991 Civic/CRX 'EF'?
I have heard people calling these cars 'EF' so much that I actually thought that is what they are called. But in the latest issue of Honda Tuning, they referred to the 1988-1991 Civics/CRXs as the 'ED'. And sure enough, The VIN number of 1988-1991 Civics/CRXs has the 'ED' designation. Not 'EF'. So where did the 'EF' come from anyway?

Well, I would not make racist remarks about the Japanese people. But I have to agree that it is kind of stupid to go around using the term 'EF' here in America as if these are the cars I (and others here) am really driving. Although everyone is free to like or build whatever car they want (and I respect that), I will take my feather light 1988 CRX DX with its 1994 Del Sol B16A over some bloated, options-laden SIR.
Speaking of the SIR, I actually had the opportunity to race one at the track once. And yes, it was a true SIR, complete with right hand drive. At the time, I had my SI (quite a bit heavier than my DX). And even with that car, I still ran anywhere from .4-.5 seconds faster in the quarter mile. So although I have no problem with anyone liking the JDM thing, I am NOT impressed with the JDM SIR.

Its not that hard to understand. This car stuff, or the hip term, "import scene" is full of just being cool. The EF term adds the "cool" factor. It just sounds cool if its JDM. But then there are some people that just don't know and just go with the flow. Same reason people have CF hoods. When CF hoods weren't out, no one was painting their hoods black. No one in there right mind would put a different color hood on there car, but since its carbon fiber, its "cool".
That's just my opinion and I'm know everyone isn't like that. Just take it for what its worth.
