Default d16z6

i'm thinking about getting a d16z6 for my civic hatch and wanted to know what you guys think about that Idea.

is it fast in an ef? what do you guys think it will run on the 1/4 mile?
i'm thinkin about building the EF for auto crossing.

let me know what you guys think.

I think the Z6 will be good for the price of it plus if you want to auto cross, it will help keep you in a lower class, depending upon what your current driving abilities are. Another option for you to look into is a mini-me depending upo which motor you currently have. If you have the A6, I would find a Z6 head, P29 pistons, and do it all at once.

IDK, try checking out http://www.d-series.org. I have been on there for a while and know you'll be able to get all the info you need. Good luck at any rate.

or check my stuff for sale in the links in my signature below. the high compression arias pistons are already mounted on Z6 rods, i would just recommend new piston rings. the JG cam and AEM cam gear are great for N/A power and I also have a Z6 head that I can sell you if you need one. PM me if you're interested in any of it or a package deal for it all.

oh, and yes a Z6 is a great choice in an EF chassis even if only for the reason of not having to worry about mounts, shift linkage, and "modifying" the front crossmember to cram a b-series in there.

cool. but what do you guys think i'd run in the 1/4 mile.

does anyone have a z6 in their ef? what does the vtec sound like, can it be noticed
or is it just silent? does it pull harder when it hits?

i think i'm going to go with the z6 for now, just to get my driving abilities at a higher level.

I have a semi-built Z6 in my '91 hatch. Pulls like a ****. If I was going to bench race, I'd say it's mid 14s.

VTEC on SOHC motors sounds a lot different than it does on DOHC motors, because VTEC is only on the intake side. Most of what you hear in DOHC is the exhaust lobe hitting. Does it pull harder in VTEC? Well yeah, that's kinda what the point of VTEC is. Low RPM economy and high RPM power.

That said, my motor screams in VTEC and has a "mean" sound on the low lobe.

Default depends on what you're after / budget

A z6 swap is definitely worth it compared to a OBD-0 D16.

Part of the magic, is the Z6 head (VTEC) and the OBD-1.
OBD1 just runs better and smarter (and more tuneable)

Not sure if the Z6 tranny is better, I think it might be.
You should check out gear ratios for that stuff.

I've been driving a CRX Si for year. Now I got a Z6 EG.
The EG has more pep and gets better gas mileage.

nah, it's not worth switching from a cable setup to a hydro setup just to run a Z6 tranny. just stick with a civic/crx Si or ZC tranny and you'll be fine. both bolt up to a Z6 block with no problem, only with the ZC tranny you may have axle issues.

I have one and I like it, i'm not about drag racing because you're always going to be slower than someone else. There are better things to spend your money on.
The z6 is ultra cheap, I had an Si engine that blew the bottom end and I managed to make money on the swap ($350 for a complete z6 swap on craigslist)
I sold all my old SI MPFI components and made my money back.

The z6 is also a great candidate for boost later on when your budget permits

I just wanted to know what it can run on the drag tracks, just to know.
but I want to build my civic for auto crossing, because its not just how fast the car is its also how good the driver is also. I want to work on my driving skills.

so the d16z6 ef is fast enough to keep up with gsr's both auto crossing and drag?
EF is good car for auto crossing correct? I saw some japanese dudes drifting EF's
and it looked hella cool.

well I guess i'll give the z6 a shot, thanks guys.

Yeah, the Z6 should do fine compared to GSR's as long as their not modded to hell. Even in that case, if you bump up the CR a little, port the head, and throw in a good cam you should be good. The Crower Stage 3 is really good but will require springs/retainers. If you're on a budget and want power though, boost is your friend.

BTW, if you want to FF drift, you'll need an LSD to help you pull through the turns evenly. I've tried it with an open diff and it just doesn't work that well. Good luck with the build.

LSD? there aren't any sohc trannys that have lsd, are there?
so I have buy an lsd kit and install it into my tranny? All I know is that civic type r trannys come with LSD. I bet the B16b motor would turn my ef into a killer sleeper.

Some of the JDM ZC trannies came with LSD's. Either that or you can buy a aftermarket LSD for it. If you want to do any sort of serious road racing though, I highly recommend you get one.

The Crower Stage 3 cam is going to need a full race port and polish along with 12:1 compression, at the very least. Anything less and you're better off with the Stage 2. There was a lot of dicussion about this cam over on D-Series.org and a few guys are running it.

I think you can pick up a LSD from OBX for a little under 300 or get one from Quaife for 900ish. IMO though, you're better off just buying the JDM ZC trans that comes with an LSD if you don't plan on making huge power.

how much do the jdm zc lsd tranny go for?

Can I go to a racing shop near my place and order one?

the race shop by my place is taking hella long to get my obd0 to obd1 jumper harness. I want to drive this car so bad, just to see what it can do.

The ZC was sold basicly everywhere besides the USA, so you'd have to get one from hmotorsonline.com or something. They currently have a hydro zc on there for $400, to give you an idea. You may really want to go that route, since not many people have success putting tranies back together the 1st time. You would also end up spending about that much for someone w/experience to put the LSD in any tranny you get.

As for the d16z6 itself... switching to obd1 is the way to go for the best power, but it can be a pain in the butt if you dislike wiring. The z6 is a good motor you can get for cheap, one of the best power option for the money.

already got it. and it is already in. But I don't have the obd0 to obd1 jumper harness yet. the race shop hasn't got it yet. they said they'd call. but damn I can't wait, i'm about to go in on monday and ask where the hell it is.

damn Now I want to pick up the zc tranny. so I guess they don't make cable lsd trannies, or do they? because I don't want to convert to hydro unless I have to.

what is the best way to add power to this baby?
