Default Spun Bearing: Repairable or Not Worth It?

Hey guys,

I travel a lot for work, 1000+ miles a week sometimes, I have a B18b in a 4dr eg. I stopped to get fuel in one town and I heard a ticking, kind of like when your valves are out of adjustment. Then it became more of a "clacking." I figured it was just because I had been driving it for about 2.5 hours in HOT weather. No CELS, oil pressure light did not go off, I gave it gas and it subsided, so I thought I was good to go.

Where I had to be was 30mi away so I just watched my temp gauge to see if anything would happen, about 15mi in it started warming up, higher than halfway but less than 3/4, I pulled into the right lane of the interstate and drove a little slower. The clacking was in and out at that point. It would come on and then off. By the time I reached the exit ramp of that town, my engine made a horrible noise and shut off completely, oil light never came on, I had enough momentum to get over on the side of the road. Right after it shut-off I heard a literal "spinning" noise in the engine. Similar to like spinning a skateboard wheel really fast.

After some expletives I gave it a quick turn of the key, horrible noise, but it wasn't seized.

If I were to fix this, would it be worth it?

What else could be damaged?

What's the cost looking like?

Anyone experience this before?

Before any of this happened I took great care of the engine, fluid changes, regular maintenance. It pulled strong, idled at 1,200rpm, was able to get 34mpg sometimes.

You will most likely need a new crank, rod, and obviously, bearings. Since you are down there, measure clearances and replace all the bearings.

I would also look into why it happened? Unless the motor had very high mileage on it and the bearings were shot anyway, there is no reason it should have spun. You don't want it to happen again with a new crank and bearing set.

Get an LS or B20 shortblock. They are cheap as hell.
