Transmission Oil Change
Just got a 97' prelude (automatic) and just wondering if you guys can provide information, possibly pictures too, about where the drainage bolt for the transmission is and where I can fill it back up. I just got into the honda scene so please help a brotha out! Thanks.
not sure on this one since i havent had one my self, but most auto trannys fill through the dipstick hole.
But remember that Honda uses its own ATF fluid. If you use any other atf or generic you can severely lessen the life of the transmission. So head to honda and get some.

the drain bolt is located around the bottom of the transmission and the bolt has a square hole on the middle of the bolt.... just connect your 3/8" rachet to that square hole and remove it... and you'll see the ATF drain....
and like mentioned above.. to fill the ATF.. pour it through the Auto. transmission dip stick using a long Funnel..

Jeez the autos have it easy, the manual fill hole is in such a tight spot, I had to make a filler hose/funnel to fill mine. by the time I fill it, theres an extra 1/4 qt of damn expensive Honda MTF in the hose with nowhere to go!

At least you were able to get the filler plug off. with the suspension in the way, that bolt is nearly inaccessible to me. Also, I can't seem to get the drain plug out with my 3/8 socket. Them honda mechanics torqued that **** to crazy specs on my car.

the honda mt fluid isn't that expensive, i walked out of honda wit 5 quarts of mt fluid and 2 small bottles of brake fluid for 40 buks. i was expecting a lot more, yea the trick is to take off the speed sensor on the manual to fill it up. good thing my friend knew bout that

a 17mm wrench can be used to get at the filler bolt. and buy an autozone breaker bar and at least three 1/2" to 3/8" reducers (they break easy). trust me, it will make your life much easier.

fill it through here:

it's to the left of the starter and under the coolant hose. it's a plug on top of the shifter housing. get a screwdriver to pry it up a little and pull it out. get a funnel with some kind of hose (about 6 inches of it) rigged to it and just start pouring. leave the the fill hole on the bottom of the car open. when tranny fluid starts pouring down. stop filling and close the fill hole.

Haha.
Question. To correctly check the level of how much oil is in the transmission, must the car be on? Or off?
Because theoretically thinking and using common sense, I believe the car should be off due to auto tranny's sending oil at a high pressurized speed to make contact for tranny to motor (torque converter). Am I wrong?
If so please supply factual info. Just fought with my parents telling them that you check it with it off. Not on. =/

how often are you supposed to change your tranny oil?
the manual says every 105k
i think every 5 years don't quote me on that i'll have to check.
is the plug located here?

Oh man...after my swap the guy left that tube unplugged. I always wondered what that was? Is that bad to leave that unplugged. I'm guessing so since dirt n stuff can get in there...hmm.
