how can i tell if a head is milled.. ??
friend of mine is selling a ls head build. its been sitting in his garage for a while and he doesnt remember if it was milled or not..
is there anyway i can find out?

measure the casting from top to bottom with a 6" dial caliper (do this in 3 places on each side - hopefully they are even) stock head height for a b16a2 or b18c5 is something like 5.589-5.593" - start with that and subtract your measurments...hope that makes sense

You can also sometimes tell by how deep the quench pads are. Less scientific but it's usually easy to tell if a head has been milled quite a bit. There are also tabs off to the sides with mill-limit indicators, so you can get an idea based on how much of a gap is left. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at the lower right corner of this picture, and note the circular part of the casting:
