Default SOHC non VTEC to VTEC?

I have a friend who recentley gave me his SI Non VTEC head for free.... Can it be converted to VTEC? Or am I just better off getting the whole VTEC head. Reason I ask ..... BUDGET!!
This is going on my D15b block along with an Mpfi manifold that has been bored to 60mm and also the throttle body has been bored to the same.
Thanks in Advance.

Nope, sorry bro, it cannot be converted to VTEC. If you look at both side by side and possibly dismantled, you'd understand why.

What kind of gains will I be looking at with the SI tranny, dristributor and ECU? Along with just the SI head?

you'd basically be a 1.5 Si. big difference in acceleration. you don't necessarily need to swap the head though cuz the 88-91 1.5 16valve head and 88-91 1.6 16 valve head are basically the same. you could do the MPFI conversion and swap the Si camshaft into your motor and call it a day. all in all, it should take just a few hours to complete. maybe you could have that spare head ported without any downtime on your car. then when your ready to swap heads, your car will only be down for a day or so.

to do this quick conversion is worth it. very cheap, very effective power boost. but if you're looking to be lightning fast, it'll take much more than just the conversion. since you got it for free, i say do it and just keep your eyes peeled for a VTEC head. hope that helps out a little bit.

Yes , that was the first thing I thought about after your 1st reply, was sending the head to get a P&P , I didnt think about swapping the camshaft though. Also I would like to have the head rebuilt with all new parts. I guess just sumthin for the meantime until I get a hold of a VTEC one. Speakin of that MPFI swap... Ive been lookin everywhere for the wiring harness for this swap, to tell the truth I cant find squat. You know of any resources?

nope but you can get the VTEC solenoid and put it on a z6 head or possibly a y8 head that would work then you can run the wires

Yeah, if it's a VTEC head to begin with Anyways....

You don't need a jumper plug/harness to do the conversion (although it would be nice and easy, resplicing the wires is the cost effective way to do it). You can just cut the wires and re-solder as needed (butt connectors will work, but soldering is preferable). search and you'll find many threads directly related to the wiring portion of the conversion, if i remember correctly, it's basically just wiring up two more fuel injectors and adding two wires for the Si distributor. i strongly urge you to study a chilton wiring diagram for the ECU to really understand why you need to move the wires around. but if you follow the directions you'll find on this site, you should be all right. don't forget that you need the fuel injector resistor box aside from the Si manifold, dizzy, and ECU
