Default Some noob questions.

Alright i dont reall know much about engine classes at all...I have a first gen crx, and eventually i would like to do an engine swap. I've searched on this forum and google(even wikipedia has a right up on honda engines) but im still a little confused. The most repeated things i hear are b16's, b18's, and LS engines. What is a ls? Whats the general price difference between them and wich is more powerfull n/a. From what i gather the b18 seems to be more powerfull but the b16 seems to be a more popular swap so is it cheaper. And whats gsr.

Thanks for the help.

an ls motor is a b18. i'm not trying to insult you or anything, but the b18 just means a 1.8 liter engine. there are different subclasses of b18's such as the b18a, b18b1 (integra ls motor from 94-01 correct me if i'm wrong because i'm only familiar with 94-01 integra motors), b18c1 (integra gsr engine from 94-01), b18c5 (us integra type-r engine)

the ls engines are non-vtec motors that have pretty decent torque (for a honda-engine) and aren't as rev-happy as the vtec models. they are relatively cheaper than the b16, b18c1 & b18c5. the b16 that most people get for their civics and crxs are from japan usually. check out http://www.hmotorsonline.com for more info about prices and whatnot.

well as far as the b18 goes it all depends on which one you get. the ls b18 is just a 1.8 dohc non-v-tec. the gsr b18 and the type-r b18 both have v-tec, but of course are more expensive than the ls. now if i remember right the the b16 is around 160-170 hp. the ls 1.8 has around 140 hp, the gsr has around 180 hp and the type-r is between 180 and 200 hp but i may be wrong on one of them. as far as price for complete swap on any of them it depends on where you look. ebay will or will not always cheaper. or you can luck up and find a friend with one that is hurtin for money and get a complete swap for cheap

Alright thanks. So the b16 is the cheapest without hookups? Can a ls be changed to vtec or something because i have herd of some frankensteine engines. If i didnt find a complete swap or a parts integra, i woulda only need to get motor mounts ?

yes you could make an ls motor into vtec with a b series vtec head. or even a b20 (crv motor) they're called ls-vtec or cr-vtec respectively. just do some reading up on here. since they're all b-series engines, the mounts would all be the same that you'd have to get.

this guy says it well:
