new york state inspection
i have a 98 civic ex with a obd1 b16 motor... last summer it couldn't pass inspection due to the car failing emissions. when it would fail the mechanic would told me it failed because of "failure to obd". i tried putting a varity of computers in the car to see if i could pass but it never did...i also have no check engine lights. i was wondering if there is a way around it. i am considering buying an obd2 block and building a new motor with the hopes it will pass emissions
Bump to help him and myself out....
I know you can convert the motor to OBD2 with a dizzy, injectors and other stuff ...Use a OBD2A jumper harness to OBD1...I heard you just plug in your stock OBD2a ecu for inspections...After you pass throw the OBD1 ecu back in...I would like to hear from someone that has done it though...yea Ive been in kinda the same dilemma...Im also from NY...and also a 98' ex... It has been pushing me away from doing a swap and even a turbo kit...I would love to run OBD1 so I can get a good tune...But going for inspections??idk how that will work out...

I just got an inspection sticker the other day, but I would like to know if when I turbo my car and do a OBD2a to OBD1 ecu tuned with chrome if I will be able to pass the OBD2 plug in on inspection...If I cant run the OBD1 ecu will my OBD2a stock ecu work with the turbo set up with out leaning out my motor or causing problems just for an inspection...I belive this is along the same lines as the creator of this topic is trying to find out...

NOw you KNOW this guy's got no ******* clue what he's talkign about...
'cause at a '96+ inspection they attach a computer to it and all the results get sent straight up to albany....then they send back a # that matches the car and all and it prints out - you can't just buy inspection stickers anymore...it doesn't matter who u "know"...you can't get around it... The data is required for the sticker of the emissions, same as the ECU data...and you can't just enter it off of a different car...
*sigh*
good job
at OP:
I'm surprised it failed, I never get my cars to fail the inspection
You do have a cat on it, right? Or is it just a resonator? Either way put a cat on, even if it's just temporarily it'll combust more & lower ur emissions

lol "this guy I know" has no cat no resonator no muffler + he had a check engine light for primary o2 (car WAS tuned using wideband o2 tho)...I do know they plugged in a 2000 ford taurus into the computer...lolz (before that I heard it had to be same model car *shrugs* )
its one thing how the system actually works & then there is how NYS/DMV tells you it works - which is not the same

it shouldnt lean it out too bad if your setup is mild. If you ran the stock ecu with low boost you should be ok. only way to really know for sure is to try it

lol if "he" used a stock ECU on the k-R swap the motor would be long blown... becareful
wideband that shizznit

yea I guess so... You figure people run stock ecus just with fmu's at low boost levels...Ill figure out a way, "Where there is a will, there is a way"...Thanks for the input...
