Default Which would be better/easier

Im lookin at pickin up and EM1 when i get home from iraq, my question is wich route is better to go for engine management would it be to convert to OBD1 or just use a standalone unit. plus for stand alone units wich are good? I just want to make this as easy as possible cause i want to do all the work on my car so i feel better about it lol.
any help would be great.
