Default Do you own a hatchback and a subwoofer? question inside...

i drive a 94 civic hatch, and currently i have a 8" JL subwoofer in the box designed for it. my friend let me borrow his 12" mtx subwoofer that had a large custom box. the problem is the 12" is not any louder and in fact the 8" sounds crisper. was it just a fluke or will it be pointless for me to upgrade to a bigger woofer/box combo? i dont think there is enough air for the larger subwoofer to be used efficiently.

I drive an Integra and have a 12" Kicker L7 in a ported 1.5 cubic ft ported box and it pounds. It takes up the back half of my trunk because of my rear strut bar. The only problem is that it weighs a ton.

did you use the same amp on both boxes? maybe try using his amp too. It should make a difference, as long as the box is built right. it should sound nearly as tight and handle lower tones.

the audio place i worked for in the old days,i took two 8w1 and tried a couple enclosers sizes from the jl book and the 2 8w1 in a ported encloser, dont remember the specs but a 4 inch port 15 inch long.wow!sound is ruthless.some friends would ask, what do you got in there 2 tens? no eights, running off a ppi pc 275.
the eights sond perfect when listening to any music.

I have a 93 Si Hatch with a JL10W3 in the JL sealed enclosure. For the amount of space in the rear of my hatch I would actually like to step down to a 8". The 10" sounds great!! But it takes up a good amount of the space back there plus I would like to save a few pounds too.

You can see what my set up looks like if you go to my web site.
Go to "my car" and then just scroll down to the audio section.

an 8 is a lot lighter so its able to bounce back fast. thats why if you want SQ and you listen to trance and other fast beating music then you need a small size sub like a 10 or 8

if you like rap, the 12,s and 15, are for you.

Unless you feel the need for more bass, you dont need to upgrade. And as you said yourself, it pounds, so why upgrade

A sealed 10 and a ported 8 require about the same amount of space. I generally recommend people to use ported 8s if they think they will be satified with a sealed 10. Most sealed 10s have a tuned freq. of around 45 Hz, but in the same space you can tune an 8 to around 34 Hz, and gain the 3 dB from the port. The speaker is generally a little cheaper, lighter, and more impressive for that size box.
I have been using JL 8w6s forever, in just about the same size/tuned enclosure. Just for reference, I hit 136 dB in a spare tirewell enclosure with a 200 watt amp on them. It was tuned low enough to ripple the roof. It rocked. Probably much like the 8W1 box from an above post.
Good luck,
Wes

Indeed. I just got my new 2002 12" Kicker L7 a day ago. I am in the process of designing the enclosure, and I would love to see some pics of your setup. I am going to build a fiberglass spare tire well enclosure, and give it 2.5 cuft ported and 920W RMS.

Have you ever had it metered? What sort of dB do you hit?
