Default Transmission gurus - High pitch noise when clutch not pressed in -help-

So recently I replaced my clutch and flywheel with some exedy equipment. Now about 500 miles later I have sort of a high pitch noise / squeal when the clutch is not pressed in. If you even gently press the clutch pedal, just enough to take up the free play (about 1/2 inch) the sound disappears completely.

After searching the forum, I have come up with 2 culprits I think it could be.

1. Throw out bearing (TOB). This part seems to have a high failure rate. Even though I replaced it when I did the installation. However some people believe that if the TOB was bad the trans would make noise regardless of the clutch pedal position.

2. Main shaft bearing. Some people have complained of a cricket like noise (kind of like the noise I hear) and claimed by replacing this bearing the noise will go away.

Personally I don't know where to start, I am just very upset and frustrated. Either way I am not looking forward to working on my trans again.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I believe that it is the throw out bearing. My friend had the same noise and when he would even rest his foot on the clutch it would go away. we ended up replacing the clutch, pressure plate throw out bearing while we were in there and the noise went away.

if you just think of the logistics of it. if you slightly put your foot on the clutch really the only thing that should move without pressure is the arm which has the throw out bearing attached to it.

I have heard of some people over greasing the bearing on purpose so they do not have this problem early. I know of others that will only use oem dealer throw out bearings. I thought exedy used the same company as oem for the bearing but i could be wrong.

i had the same problem with my oem exedy throwout bearing. not soon after my clutch install, i had a whine from the tranny when clutch was out. also my clutch didn't engage well because of a broken tab on my TO bearing.

if you have the extra money, get an oem one cause the exedy ones aren't the best.

i also heard this problem can be the input shaft bearing(which requires disssasembly of transmission). lets hope for your sake it's not that.

i wouldn't worry to much about that sound. i drove my car like that for over a year and just recently broke the tab off the bearing. i almost wonder if the exedy bearing is supposed to make that sound.

Yea that sound is a bearing, could be the throw out bearing or the bearings on the input or output shaft. Does the sound increases when accelerating?

Thanks for the responses,
While accelerating my exhaust and engine noise make it too difficult to tell.

Actually I am hopeing it is the TOB, replacing the other bearings looks difficult.

yup, it's the TOB or perhaps one of the clutch springs has gotten loose and is rubbing against the flywheel.

is it hard to get into gear with the clutch disengaged?
