how to get started in racing???
i want to get started in racing, whether its taking my car to a track for an open track day or enter in a class and race. I JUST WANT TO RACE. ive been canyon running lately and its fun, but i cant concentrate on my driving as much cuz i have to worry about going off a cliff, hitting a car, a wall, etc. please, can somebody give me any advice on how to get started.
• First off, STOP racing on the street.
• Next, spend a few months reading this link: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/353425 and all the places it takes you.
• If you really want to learn and can't stand to wait, you could come out to the NASA race at Willow Springs Aug. 5 & 6. Meet the racers. Ask questions, and LISTEN to what they tell you.
• If you've got a car that will pass tech and you can spare a few hundred dollars, you could even sign up for HPDE and run that event yourself: https://www.nasaproracing.com/...d=396
There. That's how to do it. Now if you want to be mature beyond your years, read everything in all the links above before you make another post...

If your a complete noob to racing i reccomend the HPDE program also. I started earlier this season doing a 1, and after a few DE's i got signed off for 3 and 4. Just sit back, dont be cocky, and soak in as much as possible. Woot wheel to wheel for me next year.

Excellent suggestion. I wish I had gotten better at auto-xing before I started racing...
yea there should definately be some useful links in that FAQ and all around the particular board (just search) For the most part you can bring your car to auto-x just like it is and drive....just read over the novice manuals that tell you how the auto-x will be run and what to bring
also you can try going to scca.org for more events other than just what NASA offers.

I like to autox to get that "racing" urge out.
I think karting would be a good option. I think that's what I want to do because of the 1)costs 2) speeds 3) fun factor 4) Thunderbolt raceway is only going to be about 45 min from house and E-twon is 1.5 hours.
Cheap and fun

Not saying there isn't value to these school, but for $3K a person can buy a decent (not front running) car.
The autocrossing is a great place to start. Also consider start attending some club races as a spectator (or better yet volunteer for the club) if racing is your end goal.

If you're really looking into racing.
I personally recommend getting the book "Go Ahead - Take the Wheel". It will advise you of everything from square 1 to wheel-to-wheel racing.
Best damn book on racing I've ever read.

There are some very informative posts here. Unfortunately, SCCA does a crappy job of marketing to the public....OK - they DON'T market to the public. I don't understand why
Anyway, find an autocross or an HPDE (High Performance Driver Education) and start there. My experience has been that most drivers will chat about how to get involved if you show interest.
We LOVE getting more people involved. The younger the better in my opinion. I hate that SCCA looks like a bunch of old farts in a private 'gentlemen's' club.
