It's designed more for efficiency than for horsepower...the turbo diesels on Ford trucks have a similar design to this.

Looks like the design maximizes torque delivery down low before vacuum opens the gate to allow more high-RPM breathing room. Seems like a typical way to save fuel while allowing a bit of performance. Cool design, but one that will have people ripping that snail off and throwing a new one on within weeks if they want to hotrod the motor.

Cool design....Honda did something similar in the 80's with their variable geometry "Wing Turbo" on the JDM C20AT 2.0L V6 Legend motor, full boost by 2000rpm and peak torque at 3500rpm.

personally, i think it is a great design for a street car. i have been trying to figure out how to use a powerstroke vgt turbo on a honda, and have the variable turbine work properly. quick spool, and top-end power...sounds good to me.

Why don't they use something like this on bigger turbos?

They'll be all over them 1 month after the cars come out. You know a bunch of young tools are going to buy the cars and then wreck them. (Hence why K swaps are getting cheaper. )
