i'm a n00b but i think ZC is like the same thing with a DOHC head, and b16 will be way faster.

(please don't flame, but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, still learning but i like to try and help, shoot you all have been helping me...)

B16 is better. But the zc may tie in the low end. IF you turbo the zc and it pops, its a cheapER replacement.

If you are concerned about which is "faster" or perhaps has more speed potential in stock form, get a B16. If you want a cheap motor that will be fun to putt around in and maybe throw a turbo on it later get a DOHC ZC.

This is purely opinion, but if you are going to try and rock this setup in a long term sense, the DOHC ZC might not be where you want to go. The B16 and the SOHC ZC (basically a JDM D16A6, the EF Si motor, with a better cam) have much greater support with parts manufacturers than the DOHC ZC, at least in North America.

The only reason I rock the SOHC is inexpensive market support (uses same parts as the Si, just different block code), otherwise I would totally rock a B16.

i would say the b16a1 but iv'e heard from a friend that has been working on hondas all his life that a b16 doesnt make the same torque the zc makes....

Isn't the torque difference like 106 to 111. I doubt its noticeable.

these threads suck because of people always comparing price to the performance of the motor

160hp 111tq

10:2:1 compression 10:4:1 compression in the 92-95 sir b16

dual overhead camshaft

vtec

high rev

low geared transmission

Factory lsd

basicly basicly basicly the b16 is superior for all those reasons and then some, with a b16 in a crx or hatch you are looking at mid 14s with real good driving.

it may not have alot of tq but it has more features that make the motor more superior over alot of other motors

i just think anymore there are so many motors and the people present the whole

this vs that when comparing

sohc zc
sohc y8
sohc z6
dohc zc

is a better comparison

also like

b16a
b18a
ls/vtec
b18c
b18c5

comparing sohc to dohc is like apples to oranges. they arent in the same motor class so to compare sohc to dohc its hard as heel to come up with a comclusions so the only thing you can do is make it a matter of opinion, however you could come up with a comclusion if you compared all the sohc you would be able to find a difference that makes one motor better than another, same thing with dohc

I just dynoed a friends ZC with 50 shot ZEX and it put down 163HP 163TQ. No mods done to engine itself except for BKR6E plugs. Not bad for a $500.00 engine and a $350.00 nitrous kit IMO. And when or if you need to replace the engine its $500.00 instead of $1500.00.
Dont get me wrong, a B16 swap is very nice. I had one in my old Rex.
Its the same reason people do SOHC builds....no mount kit required, can use your stock tranny, and the engines and transmissions are everywhere...hell most people will just give em to ya if you get them out of their garage LOL!
In the end its up to you and your wallet.

Both are 1.6 liter engines. Neither is going to be a torque monster. Peak torque on a ZC is 106ft-lb. And peak torque on a B16A is 111ft-lb. The B16A does actually have a better torque curve. And the B16A transmission has better gearing. So in all ways possible, the B16A comes out better here.

By the way, have you ever compared the torque curves of a ZC and B16A side by side? There is NO WAY the ZC is better. I think alot of people feel that the ZC has better torque because alot of people have unrealistic expectations of the B16A (due to its higher cost, VTEC, and B-series block stamp). Alot of people expect more from an engine in this cost range, and end up calling the B16A 'torqueless' when it doesn't deliver on their expectations. But fewer people complain about ZC torque because they are not expecting as much from a cheaper swap.
