Very good unit, but then again it depends on you using PSP, [proper speeding procedures] like with any radar detector, if you are the car targeted, it's too late. 94

Usually 3/8th of a mile (Top end radar detectors), but it also depends on different conditions.

Seems a little longer than 3/8 of a mile, but it definitely depends on terrain... Line of sight straight highway seems like close to a mile before the detector goes in to "full alert"... :shrugs:

The 8500 is a really solid unit, which reminds me, I need to buy one

Sure would be nice to add the ZR3 though

Its not just how far can a detector see a radar signal.

There are 4 different technologies laser, x band, k, and ka band.

Think of a flashlight pointing at the ground. Now pull the flashlight away from the ground. The circle on the ground gets bigger. This would be called beam width. The same thing happens with a radar gun.

a radar detector pics up on the stray signal outside the targeted area.

A laser radar gun is going to produce a beam width the size of the front of your car at about 1/2 mile away. So if your detector signaled laser detection either you or the person next to you was just hit. No where near enough time to hit the breaks.

The other 3 bands are RF so the beam width is a lot wider. No one uses x band anymore. So you left with k and ka. These signals aren't just blasted down the street. If they were they would be easy to detect. They are picking you off like shooting fish in a barrel. Since the beam width is wider you have chance to slow down. There are developing a technology called POP that will make radar detector useless IMO. The signal is such a short burst that you wont know if its interference or an actual radar gun.

They say that laser alert only doesn't protect you from a ticket, only gives you time to think of an excuse...

Or "break down" on the side of the road or make/find an offramp

They should start making the detector with printers. I think it would be more useful, prints out your ticket once your hit.

Nothing beats a good sense of your suroundings and a little common sense.
