CLEAN Ebay Si Tranny - Will it work with my motor? WANNA BUY
I found a clean as **** looking transmission on ebay, mine recently popped and I wanna swap out the dx I put in just for the time being
My motor is a 88 d16a6 but im pretty sure my flywheel is a 90-91 as well as much clutch
Is there anyway to tell?

How hard is it to replace a throwout bearing aswell?

Yeah be careful, i bought one for $150 a few months ago that "worked great" then get it in my car and the ring gear and t/o bearing are shot.

an 88 si tranny will NOT work with a 90-91 clutch flywheel as there are diff amounts of splines.
i dont remember i think 88 has 20? and 90-91 has 21 splines? its been a while anyways throwout bearing is super easy to replace. You would have to worry more about the input shaft bearing.

If the tranny is 88 then just make sure you have the clutch for the 88 and yeah his right about the splines. Count and make sure which one you have. Other wise the 89-91 tranny will work just fine
alrighty, this will work then.
Tranny seems to be in mint shape fomr the description and pics though
Now I just need to find some kuckles

Looks good? haha..my b16 tranny looks good and mint from the outside yet it grinds in 3rd and needs a new 4th syncro....So that doesnt mean anything...just be carefull buying that thing,,plus guy said he never used it so he doesnt really know whats good....and he also said that the throwout bearing doesnt spin freely.... So just be carefull buying that thing..
Its not really that hard to replace the throwout bearing...You have to crack apart the tranny to get to it..i just did it on my b16 tranny....i used a writeup i saw on here and the helms manual as a guideline ,,let me see if i can find that thread

davens top 10 reasons why this is a bad idea...
10. Ebay sucks
9. There is no way to verify the donor car mileage.
8. The seller has 95% on 22 feedbacks. That almost sucks by Ebay standards.
7. Its in Canada.
6. Its been painted. Never a good sign. And for a painted transmission, its not that clean.
5. The seller has no idea what kind of condition it really is since they have never used it or cracked it open
4. They use the words "seems" and "assuming" in their description. You're the one who is assuming you won't get screwed.
3. "no warranty implied as this is a used part" basically, give me your money and expletive you.
2. Do you know its a Si tranny? Does the seller? Who says it was the stock tranny in the donor car? You'd be pretty pissed if they sent you a DX tranny, right?
1. You are better off buying something like through a business that will stand behind their parts. Try a salvage yard yourself or an engine importer.

Ive got better pics of the transmission here at home, it is clean.
Gotta take a chance I guess, its only $50!!!
Ive seen si traniies go for $250
Can I tell if its an si by the serial number he gave me?

Maybe it'll be $50. You never know with an auction. You did put it out on a board with a bunch of other people that might be looking for the same transmission.
Also, Shipping is probably going to be $75 or more.
$250 for a tested and business backed transmission is not unreasonable.
Check out http://car-part.com.
Call engine importers like Nippon and Hmotorsonline. They sell sohc zc trannys(same as Si) for pretty cheap and they have a lot less miles on them than usdm trannys.
The serial number is nearly worthless for ID purposes. Aside from the "L3" that tells you it might be a Si. If it says SL3 its definately not an Si. There is a possible way to ID the tranny...
On the outside of case, just above the fill hole, is a round stamp with some numbers/letters. All these do is specify bearing sizes. The Si usually had larger bearings and this is reflected by a code of PL3/3000. If it’s PL3/A100, the tranny has smaller bearings and is probably a DX, HF, EX model. I say “usually” and “probably” because there are some small bearing Si transmissions floating around. If the round stamp is blank, it’s an ’88 transmission and you’re SOL using this method to ID the gearset.
I still think that after this is all said and done, you're going to be $150 lighter and the proud owner of a wornout, tired, maybe Si tranny.

davens brings up some excellent points. I don't agree that ebay sucks. It can be a great place to get parts. That being said, I wouldn't touch that transmission with a ten foot pole. 95% on 22 feedbacks doesn't "almost suck" it does suck. Sounds like this guy's deals has left some unhappy people on Ebay in the past. on The exterior condition doesn't mean squat. Mine is filthy but only has 119K, has been regularly serviced with Honda MTF, still works like new. The fact the guy went to trouble to put "no implied warranty as this is a used part" in the ad screams "buyer beware" to me. Finally you get what you pay for (even on Ebay), a $50 transmission is probably going to worth what you paid for it.....

I cant believe you guys havent brought up this, he says "It came out of a modified car"
that probably means the person who drove the car beat the crap out of it and you know what i bet the tranny came out of this guys car

Don't do it! I'm out $150 after a similar auction. You can't see what the inside looks like and yes it's probably beat to crap. The guy who sold me mine was "going to use it on his turbo project" and said it shifted smoothly, but it's worse than my stock one with 270k on it..... hmmmm... at least I know now... don't make the same mistake.

what's wrong with your tranny? it's not like they're that hard to rebuild (as long as you didn't frag the case or anything).
heck, if your trans was an Si, and you've got a DX in it, swap the Si final drive into the DX. instant Si. assuming the fd is good.
