Default autometer prolite

Anyone ever wire up one of these? I have one without the sender and i was thinking just tapping into the wire going to the back of the cluster (yellow/red) and running the other wire to the 12V ignition turn on. So i did this and it was no good, the prolite did not come on and the oil light on the dash stayed on, disconnected the prolite and the light on the cluster went out. Anyone have any insite on this? There are two wires from the prolite, i goes to the sensor and the other goes to a 12V.

Here are the instructions on how to do this

from what I read in that install guide, it didn't say anything about tapping wires, it just said to install it to the temp sensor and ground out the other one, put the red to ur ignition switch so you get power...

That should be all

Though I've never hooked up a temp guage before..
